New steering wheel proving to be a major pain in the behind

  1. Hi everyone,

I bought a rosewood steering wheel from Ebay last year and then left it for ages to try and fit. Had a go this weekend and the boss it came with doesn't fit.

I tried JK and VWH but they don't have either a replacement boss or boss kit that would be suitable.

Has anyone else had this problem?? I can't be the only one - Maybe it's because I am female :)

The splinds don't line up in the new boss as it tapers out at the bottom (am at work at the moment hence the rushed post but will add pics later!)

Can anyone recommend where I may be able to get a replacement? The steering wheel has 9 holes and I can only find 6 or 12 hole bosses on tinternet.

Here is a link to a wheel very similar although probably not exactly the same (!) that shows you an example of what I am after:

Please can someone help a damsel in distress who is about to have a meltdown??

    Thanks :)

    xx

have you got a picture of the new wheel, and the boss from top and bottom, could the number of splines in the boss and on the steering column, i may have a boss, but will have to check im not to far from you, also you can always re-drill bosses

Who was the seller on eBay have you contacted them to see if they have supplied the correct boss.

Bear in mind you may have a later boss as they are different from (1974 or 1975) onwards.

  4. Thanks to you both!

I will have to go home and get some pics on here to show the steering wheel, the boss and the top of the steering column.

I have contacted a couple of guys in Ebay (one being the seller but they don't have the steering wheels for sale anymore so not sure how helpful that will be!)

Daisy is a Late Bay (73) but I am not 100% sure whether the steering column is the original or a replacement!! ???

I am only in Bognor Regis so not too far from you! Hello from along the South Coast :)

  5. Right, at home with a bit more time now.

This is the steering wheel column minus the current steering wheel:

And here is the steering wheel I bought:

Does the column look like a standard late bay one? It tapers out at the bottom and that's what is causing the problem. I just need to find the right boss and I will be sorted!

    Thanks

your steering column looks the same (wiper & indicator stalks, housing, location of ignition key etc) around the taper

I have a few bosses in the garage will take a look to see if one maybe suitable, the nine holes is the issue, I'm only on Hayling so not to far. Your column etc looks standard late bay to me

^ what about making a 10mm spacer up, the only other option I can think of is ask MCJ products if they could make a non drilled boss up & ferantini gets it drilled/tapped at a local engineering company

  9. Thanks to you all for help. At least I know it's definitely a late bay steering column so that's one hurdle out the way.

I'm starting to think I should just get another that comes with a standard boss as getting modifications to a new boss sounds expensive :-

  10. If its any help I've got a 74 late bay I bought a banjo steering wheel with a beetle boss, with a little bit of grinding at the bottom it fits well, maybe that gives you options with the boss you have or getting a replacement
