just got a new front panel and it's got a sticker telling me to remove the black paint.
Is this right as its pretty well stuck on and will be pain to remove it all?

  2. Off the top of my head, I’d say it’s ok if it doesn’t come off after a good rubbing with wet and dry. All the new panels on my van still have the black coating on, and the paint hasn’t come off yet.

    Others will no doubt disagree...

  3. Nope, get it off! It is transit paint & will likely react. It can also cause micro-blistering. Rub it down with 40's grit DA sander then 80's grit down to 320's. Doesn't matter so much on the inside.

  4. I was told if it doesnt come off with 2k thinners just flatten and go over it, if it comes off remove it all.

  5. I spent 3 years rubbing this stuff off panels as it causes nothing but problems. It is only used to stop decay whilst the panels are stored & moved (dispatched) etc

  6. Also you don't need to do it now but after it's fitted & just before it is ready for paint. You will remove most of it during prep anyway.
The sticker will probably be more difficult to remove!!

It needs to come off. Then scuff the panel with a DA, then etch.

I very often see restored vans where after a couple of years, the black paint is lifting.

  9. This ^ New metal needs etch primer.
Sand it back to metal, etch primer then deep fill primer ... flatted, then top coat.
Start all your coats with a light dusting this gives the rest of the coats something to adhere to.
