New ignition barrel to match keys?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by 79westy, May 14, 2018.

  1. I might need a new ignition barrel as it;s playing up. Is it possible to get one made up to my key code so I can use the original keys? Thanks :)

  2. Or is there someone who could repair it?

  7. If it playing up on staring it’s not the key bit that needs replacing it’s just the switch bit at the back. I’ve just done mine on a 79. It a column off job but quite easy. Cost about £15

  8. I think it's the barrel because I put the key in & it just won't turn, last time it took about 20 minutes of wriggling the key & removing it putting it back in etc., and some swearing.

  9. I guess the other question is how do i get the barrel out? Got a JK one coming but would like to get the old one rebuilt so I can use the same keys as for the doors.

  10. 13.50 plus 3 quid postage for a re keying kit for 1 lock! Will only work on genuine vw key. Send him ignition code or a pic of your key!

  11. I think dave@dubkeys just provides replacement lock wafers so as locks can be keyed alike! Might be worth checking the ignition barrel wafers can be replaced first, or it may be a new ignition barrel then door locks, tailgate and engine hatch would have to be keyed to new ignition code! If this is the case a second hand ignition barrel might be the way forward as i dont think he can key to aftermarket locks! Hope this helps
