New bathroom. Bath or Shower?

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by jaspervan, Oct 24, 2012.

  1. We are looking at getting our bathroom re-done but I am undecided on whether to take the bath out or not? I just wanted some opinions from anyone that has taken theirs out and whether they like it or regret it?

Just for background there are 2 of us in a 2 bed terrace and the bathroom is quite small, it currently has a shower over the bath. We mostly take showers and I am the only one that actually uses the bath as a bath but even then it is probably only about 2-3 times a year.

I was thinking of replacing it with a large walk in shower like this one:

    Any thoughts?

  2. fresno shower bath from wickes. I have fitted three , one in each of our last houses. £550 for everything, showerbath, curved glass screen, nice toilet and sink, all taps and wastes. does both jobs. :D

  3. bath .......... i lived in a house with just a shower for 9 years - it was horrible....

  4. I wanted a wet room and was going to get a kit from topps tiles

However I didn't go for it as I ended up getting a bath and separate shower setup due to a conversation with a bathstore manager when he was changing his indoor displays.

It was just out of my budget but boy am I a fan of the bath now, so think I would go for a combo and have best of both worlds - shower for work days, baths for the weekends :)

Without a bath I would hate life a lot more.

I suspect if you were to sell the house it would make it less desirable/valuable.

  9. Bath all the way - not having one means you can never have a soak (even if you don't use it very often!)

  10. Bath every time - ours is ace.

I'd be happy with just a shower as I fine myself looking at all that hot water and thinking I've now got to stay here and make it worth the cost of water and heating it but always get out as soon as washed.

Shower saves water so if on a meter its saves you money and you're not lying in your own filth.

  12. Well... now it's a show and tell :)

The bath side wall supports a pint glass lovely ;)

  13. Make a little sauna while your at it :)

  14. Keep the bath and put a shower over it.

I do not know your own plans in regards to family but you will never bath a toddler in a shower. If you move, I would think that a 2 bed terrace would appeal to a young family so they would be looking for a bath. I also saw a program recently where the bathroom was changed to a wet room. Value of property afterwards remained the same, but the market for buyers was limited. Again for the reasons mentioned above.

Plus where would you put your beer/wine/scotch/brandy whilst soaking after having spent all day laying underneath a VW on a cold/damp day :D The water from the shower would get in the glass and you would have to wash one handed !

  15. I say lose the bath.....

I'm not a fan of soaking in my own dirt. Ditch the bath and have a walk in wet room style shower. I love it :)

  17. Keep the bath ... with shower above ... same reasons when it comes to selling and bathing little uns ;D

  18. Go for a bath. It'll look if bit odd if you sell your gaff and it hasn't got one.

If you don't want B&Q tat, get a good German Bette steel tub. Ours has a square section at the end with a grippy floor...a built in shower area. That and a glass fold-out shower screen and you're done :).

  19. You need a bath to sell a house IMO. I know it's an easy fix for a new purchaser, but you only have to watch a few property programmes on TV to see that people dismiss houses because the decor is wrong, and that's just a coat of paint. I'm considering losing the bath in our second bathroom though and having a proper big shower enclosure in there.

We've discussed losing the bath in our 2 up, 2 down terrace... but bought a bloody van to soak up our money instead!!

We both agreed that a shower would suit us now, but maybe not if we had a nipper. We both agreed we didn't anticipate being in this house with a family though, it's more a starter home, but tbh, show me a young couple who can afford to buy a house with a young family!

Mrs like baths, but would forgo a bath for a nicer bathroom, I never bathe and would prefer a flat shower underfoot and room to move.

With my professional hat on, I would say from a sales perspective you're going to appeal to the widest market by staying with a bath, but buying something that catches the eye... maybe one with a shower bulge and curved screen plus a good thermostatic mixer and a couple of nice lights!
