A few days after the move ooop noorf, I found an old car under a tree looking rather unloved just round the corner.. And because Im in no position whatsoever for another stupid project I cant afford and dont have the time for, I knocked and asked if the fella wanted to sell it He asked my intentions, as he wouldnt let it go if it would be going to the scrap man, and I said I wanted to make it shiny again and run it as a daily. To which he said 'Take it away'! So here it is, an '84 Saab 900 GLs sedan. Less than 70k on the clock, found a Saab page on the facebook, that have got rather excited about the car, saying the chrome trim round the windows/still having the twin carbs/original unused spare, toolkit and jack is rare, having the correct plate no etched into every bit of glass is miraculous, etc etc.. A rather peculiar lot, but I cant mock them too much, considering how much the little details matter to me about the bus, but still, its much more understandable with Volkswagens.. All i can say is its bloody tidy inside and out, has heated seats (which is an unknown luxury for me), came with a full set of service manuals, (which go on ebay for £180, thank you very much ) and cost me nout!! Which is useful as I now live in the middle of nowhere and prior to this had no transport. Happy days for me.
To be honest davidoft, I'm rather deeply involved in the retro car scene and I'd forgotten about these altogether!! And yeah, its a lovely one, the 3 speed auto is going to take some getting used too though.. Proper nice bloke, he just wanted to see it going again, and apparently his other half had been on his back to scrap it.
I keep eyeing up saab 99 turbos but they are getting expensive now ! I like any old cars, particularly well looked after in unmolested ones. I go through fazes, had minis , a few bmw's Renault 5gtt ,then motorbikes, vw's and now I'm looking at Porsches, though the prices are a bit more eye watering
well you will like this one then, Ive been able to talk to all but one of the previous 3 owners, but I got to talk to the 1st owners sister as they kept it in the family. has been very well looked after this one, has a lot of history with it too. 100% original, even got the lovely original tape player, which will definitely be staying..
That's south that us man!!!! Durham based, I've got a garage in South Shields, I have a swapmeet every 6 months or so if you fancy a run out???
Im from Torquay mate, trust me, this is bloody north!! haha Besides, its more north than Durham.. I googled that bitch! And hells yeah, im always up for a swapmeet, keep me posted please!!
Thats a decent looking saab. I always thought all 900s were fuel injected. Saab 900 Wiki entry says they all went fuel injection in '85 and they didn't come with sway bars until then too. One of my mums friends has an early 70's 2 door Saab 99 EMS. One owner from new.
nah apparently they did single and twin carb ones before '85, been reading me service manuals.. ooh, thats nice, i do like the early '99s
It took a while, mostly because I've been concentrating on the bus, but I got this running yesterday Now the fun begins.. Have been offered some 13x7's with ET0, which should be a pretty aggressive fitment, but currently unsure if they will fit over the brakes...
