I cant find the M plate on mine either and like you I have no idea of the history. All i know it was used in the polish army and brought over here a couple of years ago. But to be fair I dont mind not knowing as its mine now and it aint going anywhere.

 

I typed the large number in from the pic you posted and it came up with this :

VIN 2152075679 :: Built on: January 1975 . ​

 

its 201 in the middle not 7 x

If your in the T2 owners club, the bloke who runs VW books will do you a letter that is accepted by the DVLA for nothing you could then get an age related plate, also if the tax exemption rolls on it would do as proof for the free tax in 2015
