with you on that i dont ride anymore :( but i found full suss takes the sense of skill and satisfaction out of a ride and just meant when you did crash it was going to hurt a lot more

Hard tail for the around win for me

  2. You wuss wearing all that body armour stuff ;) I've just checked it was 2004 that I did the Tour De Mont Blanc on my old SC Blur (well it was new then) ... given what my consultant said I don't suppose I will ever do something like that again :(

Going back on topic I'm not even sure the OP mentioned what he was going to use the bike for, and here's us discussing whether he should get a secondhand full sudser or hardtail, he wanted the latter.

Quite happy to be a wuss, the day after the weather turned it into a big Marmite fest, spent more time on the floor than the bike

  4. You went a long long way for some mud and some appears to have stolen half of your front forks

Interesting discussion. I'm about 6'1" with 32/33" inside leg. Most of my bikes are Large, around 19" or so although that seat tube measurement doesn't mean much. Some of them I should have gone for XL. In general I would size up rather than down if you're in between sizes. My experience is that you can feel 'perched' on a smaller bike and more likely to suffer front wheel lift up hills and 'over the bars' down hills on a smaller bike. Sizing up you can usually fit a shorter handlebar stem (larger sizes or older models often have longer ones) and slide the seat a little forward to compensate, and still be 'in' the bike rather than on top of it. 26" stuff is definitely cheaper but there are clear benefits of bigger wheel sizes (I have several 26ers and a 650b Frankenbike convert which I love) although if you don't ride much and don't compare sizes you won't know any different.
I'd say you're likely to fit large more often than not.
Downsides of upsizing might be limited dropper post travel but again if you don't ride much or don't use one that's not going to be a deal breaker.
As for nut clearance, I've never had a problem. Maybe I've got small ones, maybe it's just the tight troos that keep them out of the way.

  6. Cycling shorts do tend to keep your love spuds up out of the way while cycling. Definately not a good idea to wear boxers and tracksuit bottoms.:p
