I passed my driving test in 1987 and on my licence it says i can ride 50cc mopeds, do i still have to have L plates and a c.b.t? i'm toying with the idea of a moped for work but at 17 stone and 6ft4 don't wanna look a bigger fanny than i do already..... any thoughts on bikes/prices and the law etc? don't just copy and paste the blurb from the government, give it to me in man speak. Ta.

My understanding is you can ride it on L plates, but it has to be under a certain CC and/or restricted.

  3. Unless it's changed dude, you will need a CBT before you can ride legally on the road, I think grandad rights went in the late 90's,which is when I was an instructor for said CBT.

I'm certain you wont need a CBT or L plates, but more to the question is would you want to be seen on a struggling 50cc? ;D

Go do a CBT in an afternoon for about £100 and at least your choice of bikes with 125 engines will improve somewhat. 50cc really shouldnt be on the road, they struggle up anthing that looks like an incline, and 17st perched on the back will be justified grounds for mocking from other drivers and pedestrians!

i just looked on the government site, it looks like i can ride a 50cc with no L plates and only a 'recommended' c.b.t (so that means none) lol, but i would need a c.b.t and L plates for anything up to 125cc it's just a thought at the minute, i'm saving loads by not using the car and cycling to work i wondered if i could get by with just a moped and the van, it's amazing how much you don't use the car when you can't (not taxed) and you can't be arsed to unlock the wheel locks etc off the van

  8. 50cc + 17 stone...

I've got a petrol lawnmower you could convert to run on the road, it will get you there quicker... ;)

I have to say mate - and I mean this respectfully to you - the CBT and bigger bike training is really worth having, even if like you you are a regular pushbike rider.

My observation skills went through the roof when properly trained all those years ago - its worth looking in to.

  18. I was getting worried there. I used to have a scooter 1999-2003 and used it on a car licence without CBT or L plates.

  19. My Son has one of these, it's a 50cc bike and goes like stink (I'm 13st and it does 50mph easily). It will be up for sale soon as he is taking his test in a weeks time.

You can ride a 50cc bike on your car licence without the need for L plates or a CBT as already stated but if you wish to ride anything with a higher cc you would need to complete a CBT.

the law states a bike must be restricted to 28mph if classed as a moped though to be able to be ridden as a non cbt and non l plated, besides if i had onei'd fancy one of them old honda step thru's like a c90 they were ace
