MOT today for Norman and sme questions

  1. Hello all,

Well after the recent string of bad luck, with the engine siezing, its been rebuilt, and refitted, and running, then took it out for a spin and the external oil filter hose split on the barb, and i lost a good litre of oil! So i replaced that lot with some nice hydralic hose with suaged fittings which seems to do the job.
I thought lets get him in for the dreaded MOT 4 weeks early and then ill have some time to sort out repairs etc,
Well he went straight through, with only an adjustment required on the passenger side headlight to adjust beam :) He did have 2 new front tyres before hand as the old ones were not load rated and the driver side had cracked :)
But chuffed with that, then did a nice 30 mile round trip to Nigel Allens who had rebuilt my engine :)
Bit apprehensive, and nervous but all went good, temps ok, running at 1.5 bar on idle up to 3 bar when running, which i believe is fine :)

  7. Sorry guys was in a rush, err, does th pressures sound ok, got a temp gauge to go in when the first oil change is done, also what sort of speeds should I be going in each gear, should I be aiming for the highest gear ASAP, I seem to be going 30 in 3rd around town, maybe 4th sometimes, I'm usually out of first really quick, bipartisan I obv can't see revs so difficult to gauge

  8. Congrats on the pass

  9. Congrats on the MOT - I'll prob see you batting about Newquay next week ;) Regarding what speeds in which gears - I think first will only just get you going before needing to select second (about 10 mph) then third at 20 ish and 4th at about 30 ish. I have a 2ltr but often find I have to go around in 3rd at 30 otherwise in 4th it labours and kangaroos. I'd say the way it drives best is to get pretty much the most out of each gear.

  10. 30mph in 3rd is absolutely correct. I still do that with the scooby engine in my bus.

While you're running in, vary the engine speed, use the rev range but and don't boot it (more than once in a while which nobody can resist).

Std paper element filter, but you can't choose between this and oil-bath, the mounts are different.

Pass. Like eveythng they vary from year to year
Pass. Mybe the usual suspects? I've never needed one.

  17. Glad to her you are back up and running Chris and engine looks very tidy.

I am missing the fresh air linkages too - I have never seen available to buy new so best try one of the specialist VW breakers.

The rubber grommet is here http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares...hop.product_pID_191132_lang_EN_country_GB.htm

    Happy motoring!

  18. We're staying at Goonhavern from Sunday but are often in Newquay around Fistral or Morrisons or passing through up to the north shore beaches :) or around Perranporth. Mines a white over beige (yellowy beige) Devon. YNB816S

  19. i live not to far from morisons mate :)
you should try maenporth beach near falmouth if the weathers good, you can rock up pretty much on the beach like fistral used to be like. :)

ill keep my eyes peeled :)
