Middle sills

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by volkswombat, Sep 19, 2012.

  1. Does anybody know for sure whether some late bays didnt have a middle sill on the non slider side (offside/drivers side '79 in my case). We assumed i would need a new middle as the inner and outers were shot, but upon removing the inner and outer, there is no middle sill and no eveidence that there ever was. Thinking about it, im sure i read somewhere a long time ago that on very late late bays they didnt bother with them........anybody confirm this?

My ’77 (LHD) had one although it wasn’t doing much good until I replaced it. I wouldn’t have rebuilt the van without it and if you have already removed both inner and outer why not fit a middle one even if it wasn’t there before?

  4. Some definently didn't have them later on. My '77 and '79 kombis didn't. I was under the impression that only panelvans had them for the last few years to give extra strength in the cargo area, but '77 westy's had one, and westies are kombis so i'm not sure. Don't bother putting one in if you don't have to, just make sure you replace the bottoms of the B and C pillars.

  5. My 76 didn't have one either but it seemed so under strength without it, i just went ahead and put one in. Satisfied the 'Brunel' in me.........
