Mayo on oil filler cap?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by icepug, Mar 19, 2014.

  1. I have this rather strange thing happening with my engine at the moment. The oil cap is caked in mayo, I say strange because the last time I saw this was when my old xr2's head gasket was on the way out hence the water in the oil. All I can think it is that its condensation build up. I have just taken the breather pipe off and that was full off the crap so I've cleaned it out and i'm hoping that was the cause of it but is there anything else I should be looking for? As always, cheers in advance

  2. Too many short journeys ?

  3. I run the bus to work and back everyday. About a 16 mile round trip. Is that to short?

  4. ^this. It's just condensed oil vapour. Clean it off and go for a good blast up the motorway.

  8. Yeah I'd do a oil change and then take it on a run, see if you still get the issue?

  9. Do you have all your engine tinware and thermostat?

    Drive it harder..
It can take 20 miles on the M27 on a bad day to reach 100C.
Or only 5 miles flooring it uphill from Portsmouth to Fareham in 4th at 65mph going the other way on an empty road.

  11. ^this. You need heat, not new oil.

  14. i noticed some of this gunk in the filler cap last year when going around town and short trips but then went on a trip to newcastle and back which was about 400 miles on different types of road including motorway and when got back it was gone...over the winter i have fitted a thermostat and all the cooling flaps so on shorter journeys now it should heat up better and hopefully will not get this again.

  15. i had the same problem and it was the breather hose all clogged up, cleaned it all out, no problems now :)

  16. Check your radiator.

  17. It's Vw semen. Very nutritious for camper vans and humans
