?

If a food trailer didn't sell cold drinks would you go elsewhere for your food?

  1. As I'm sure some of you are aware now my wife and I are starting a catering business which will mainly include VW shows. We are just getting ready for SkegVegas and I've realised what a massive pain soft drinks are. We have to cool them which takes considerable effort given we don't have massive fridges and transport them which is a lot of weight. Whilst we will have them at SkegVegas we wanted to know whether a food trailer without soft drinks would put you off buying from there? Assuming of course the food is good quality and something you want to eat.

So let us know your thoughts in the poll, all feedback much appreciated :)

to be honest i don't buy food at shows, I've got a bus and cook stuff if im camping, i take my beverages with me as well like most people i assume, i'd think non camping shows would be better for you has people don't bring stuff with them

The trouble is with that is how do you tell people?
You either put up a sign saying "no cold drinks" which means you'll effectively turn people away, or you tell people when they order their food meaning you'll ******* people off. Either way you lose a customer.
I did festival catering for years and would advise that you do sell drinks!

If the food is good then it wouldn't deter me, I'd just buy a drink elsewhere.

Trouble with that is at busy shows you'll queue twice.

  6. We use a combo of van cooking and stall food and, for example, last weekend at Whitenoise we cooked breakfast and for lunch enjoyed chilli from Chilli Gone Barmy with a beer from the bar

Next day we did the same for breakfast and had a pizza from a stall for lunch (strangely with a beer from the bar!) but neither of the stalls sold cold drinks and were busy all the time so it was the type / quality of food that was the attraction

Hope this helps in some way and good luck with your new venture

  7. I don't recall ever buying a cold drink with food at a show/festival - and I've been to a lot

  8. Mmm, Tricky one that. If I am brutally honest I would expect to be able to buy both as has been mentioned before queuing twice is a pain

I reckon you're in the minority there. I worked catering vans for years, Glastonbury, (cha)V fest, Reading, Strawberry Fair, Cropredy, Guildford etc etc and can honestly say that the majority of customers buy drinks with their food. The majority of caterers sell drinks as well as food.

  12. You would get more business selling drinks to people and at a reasonable price, one food tent at sweetcorn wanted double what the ice cream van and others wanted for a can so on this occasion we all bought our drinks else where and as a result i doubt any of us will use these people at other shows just because its taking the p#*s a little bit and purely profiteering, I'm all for making profit, then theres greed. I know its not loads of money but soon adds up with 6 or 7 cans, would it have been better if they didn't sell any at all..... Not sure really, probably would have all moaned then as well, you expect to be able to buy a full meal/snack and that usually means a drink with it for me, unless your one of those small speciality stands eg: the pretzel dudes stand or that strawberry lady who is selling just those and nothing else, that seems ok.

It wouldn't put me off but I would expect cold drinks to be available.

  16. A lot of food vans at festivals just sell the food and not the drinks. Just recently at a weekender I got some cracking food from Chili Gone Barmy and a beer from my coolbox/bar. A food outlet not selling drinks is not a big deal in my opinion. I've found the best ones dont!

  17. Have to agree with others about queuing twice. The only exception would be if I wanted a beer with my meal and I would then have to go to the bar.

  18. I generally have a beer from the bar and rarely buy a soft drink with food. My kids do buy soft drinks with food. I'd have thought selling cold drinks was an easy profit not to be passed up. If its hot you'll sell loads.

I suppose it depends what sort of caterer you are.
If its a hobby thing, maybe ditch the drinks; if its to make a living I'd keep them.

I put maybe, if I could see before queueing you didn't sell and all you sold was something that I could get elsewhere then i'd not bother, if I got to the front and saw none i'd prob be racked off but buy food and wander off never to return...... i'd think the mark up on cans of pop and bottles of water would make it a no brainer buy dirt cheap at home bargains (can of pop is less than 30p - sell for a quid easy)
