  3. cheers guys great stuff .
as for buying a tow bar that fits to the bumper mounts , i want mine to only bolt to the inside of the rear rails if i can ,as i trust that more then the bumper mounts .
thats why i would make my own and i do think that new strong box section and coded welding will do very well .
the only reason i say i dont want to use the bumper mounts is that ive welded captive nuts that are strong i must adit but i would not like to test them with a tow bar .
    hope this make sence

  5. see this was my next thing to say , makeing a tow bar is pretty much the same as me building the rear chassis rails ,seat belt mounts . but because it will be used to tow something then it should be new or second hand ?
    do you see my point

  6. also people build there own trailers ,is that not the same as the towing hitch is welded at the front of the frame , is there a law on trailer like this .

  7. 2013 the law for trailers also changes , to, :'( :-X :-[ ::) must be factory made and stamped , or so i heard , what have we started here then the cracks good owen nw

  8. Mate if you can build chassis rails an seat belt mounts (which to be fair will hold your kids in!!) then a tow bar is well within your capabillity.. ;D

  9. im just trying to see people veiws on home made tow bars , my bro has just brought a home made trailer for his go karts ,very well made too

You can see where extra strength has been added.
    Hope this helps.

  12. Cheers stew that does help , I've sort of got an idea with it now.
I'm takeing the bumper mounts and cutting the back of them so I can make a peace that goes up around the rear rail so it's not only bolted underneath , it will have another 2 bolts through the side of the rail .
Then going to run some box section from one mount to the other so it sit nicely behind the bumper abit like the westy onces just stronger :)

  13. Hopefully this is were a tow bar will sit nicely [IMG]

  14. 1:the towbar type approval is on applicable to vehicles from 1998

2:anyone passed there test at any time can tow up to 750kg (which covers all small trailers) and lets face it is you van fast enough to be towing much more than 3/4 of a ton?

3 you load the traier so you dont have excess nose weight

4 as long as the welding is done correctly with plenty of penetration and you use thick enough wall box section (6mm wall should do it) you shouldnt have any problems

stick to those and you will be spot on!lets face it a towbar isnt a work of art and remember a 1 ton trailer doesnt take a ton to pull on tarmac only a few kilo's

  15. Cheers dude good advise there ,I've got a tow bar sorted now so don't have to make one hopefully
The trailer is in very good shape and Ill be keeping the weight down as much as I can .

The 1641 engine that is in the van should be able to pull the trailer well.

  16. I saw a 2 litre bay pull a panel van out of a muddy bog of a field where the panel van had sank to just below the centre of the wheels so youll be fine pulling a trailer tent

  17. Nice , I've been Seeing what info I can find on towing with a bay and the tow weight for one is 600 and 400 for a beetle .

Some things people are saying they have towed with a beetle is unreal

  19. Cool I'll take a look and work it all out , cheers mate
