  1. dropped my engine and then the gear box as part of my 78 west strip down & restoration ..
had a job separating the engine & gear box as the splined main shaft floated OUT of the gear box (dropped the clutch plate eventually to drop the engine ..)

I have read there is a small pin in the gear box that keep the shaft tight in the gear box ?
A/ is this the case or am i dreaming !
B/ if so can I re pin from just the diff end of the box ? (Ie split the clutch housing only ..)

If its a full gearbox job that well beyond me so I will end up with w recon swap box ?

  4. Hi, it fell out because the short 8mm retaining stud is missing from the end of the input shaft . It's a sloppy fit but prevents the shaft coming out with the clutch. You will have to remove the bell housing but it's all in the manual. The bell housing to gearbox gasket will need replacing as should the oil seal.

I had one like this for 10 years. If you get the angle right you can juggle it back into the gearbox as you draw the engine off. Putting it back no problem of course.
Just sayin... Not technically correct to leave it but no harm done.
