lowered bus - do I need new shocks?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by grub, Jul 2, 2013.

  1. My late bay has been lowered on beam adjusters - the current measurement from top to bottom shock mount is 11.5 in (290mm).

    Do I need lower shocks?

Also, can anyone measure a standard height bus for me, shock mount to shock mount, so I can determine how much mine has been lowered by?

brucieboy did measure the tyre-to-wheelarch measurement for me, but of course different size tyres puts the measurement out, doh!

If they arent already shorter than standard you will be using the shocks as hard bump stops.

On mine the shocks are 12 inches corresponding to lowering about 4 inches. Unless your wheels and tyres are smaller they will also be rubbing on corners without having a narrowed beam. Loaded for camping with people and gear that amount of lowering is depressing and unpleasant.

I managed to break my anti roll bar on an Irish road when it hooked on a bump..

I've got a beetle in at the mo that's so low it hits small stones on the car park. It needs someone running ahead with a broom. The owner took a run-up and scraped it into the workshop while I cringed and I had to drive onto blocks to get the jack under. Looks cool though.

  4. Grub my bay has adjusters on the front and down by 1 spline at the rear, I'm running standard shocks.

    1 spline/std shocks.
2 or more and you need shorter.
    Flipped spindles use standard length.
