Low Emission Zones (London?)

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Sven, Apr 10, 2013.

  1. as the UK is bound to end up on my list of travels in the next 2 years, it comes as a great disappointment to hear I won't be let into London with my bus due to LEZ's

These zones usually exclude vintage / oltimer vehicles, and the threshold for that is 30 years in most countries, but for some reason you have a fixed age at 1973 which also regulates registration tax, and this limit doesn't seem to be moving with age. It there a reason this limit stays the same, and should i expect it to eventually move? when?

Is there a way around this? (apart from paying £1000)
It's not possible there are no London residents with a registered late bay in existance, or is it?

    Thanks.

  2. is your bus a diesel then?? LEZ only applies to Diesel commercial vehicles doesnt it? my pickup is allowed in and has been many times but then it's a petrol

  3. You are right, it doesn't affect petrol engined vans. duh! they could have pointed this out more clearly, it's very confuzzling.

Thanks! and sorry for the false alarm, but this is great news to me. :hattip:

  5. On this year's menu is Southern France, Spain and Portugal, so next year we have the choice of either Romania - Ukraine - Moldova or Northern France - Netherlands and England.

If we decide to go your way, we need about 3 times the budget, even though you are much closer in distance, so that will probably be the deciding factor (sponsors even), but if not next year, it's the one after that for sure. :)

On non UK plates you'll be fine anyway!

  7. apparently it is enforced on foreign vehicles.

for a £500 fine, i wouldn't want to risk it.

  8. Camper vans are in a higher weight category anyway, as long as they have certain facilities to be classed as such.

  9. mine isn't it's registered as a microbus 8+1-seater, even though it's used as a camper. The regulations for changing vehicle purpose here is very extensive, and lacks all common sense, and makes no difference to me anyway. Campers usually only have more restrictions compared to passenger vehicles, (ferries, bridges, tunnels, parking, road tolls, etc..) so i rather keep it like that.

  10. Also remember that London itself is not really a car friendly destination due to the amount of traffic and cost of parking. Better off on public transport, in which case the LEZ is not relevant.

  11. I know... i'd be out my mind to go around London by car, but since the bus is our family member, we absolutely need him on our photos. so just one day we need him in town, and that's it.

driving can't be worse than Istanbul or Rome... Brits only drive on the wrong side of the road, Turks drive on all sides of the road, pavement, lawn and market.

  12. Your type of vehicle would be classified as PLG in the UK (private/light goods) and therefore you won't have any problems. There are additional rules for something classed as a minibus (more than 9 seats) but that doesn't apply to you, you'll be fine.

  13. Just do London last just before you get the ferry, they wont bother chasing it up.;)
