Lots of rattles, probably serious...?

    Hi,

    another newbie, another question.
My recently purchased late bay import has a half decent body but there are many ratlles coming from underneath, sounds like a box of spanners when driving over a bump. Question is where to start and what to look for?
I've checked shockers for deteriorated bushes and leaks, seem ok but am able to move the driveshafts latterally in and out of the hub/gearbox which surprises me! The van passed its MOT in Feb so am hoping there shouldn't be too much awry.
Had real fun and games wth the Weber 34ICTs which still over fuel on tickover; would it be sensible to ditch these and revert to a single twin choke instead? The engine is a 2.0 litre.
BTW I'm used to good old BMC engineering including the venerable A series engines so a rear engined, air cooled, flat four is the challenge I'm looking for!
    Thanks

    Jeremy

  2. Welcome Jeremy, the Flat 4 is as simple as the A series but for different reasons mind you , you have started off with the slightly more advanced T4 type engine which is new age modern for Aircooled!!

If you are used to BMC then you will be ok with VW. I have both. Best thing is to jack up the front and pull and push the suspension components. Does it have a camping interior? I would look for loose fitting there first before looking underneath. A lot of noise travels far and wide, the VW metal is more thinner than BMC, but better shaped to give strength however the T2 is a tinny box in the end. The Belly pans might be loose underneath, undo the front pan below the steering you can see more that way.

Check inside the cupboards and cutlery tray and cooker :)

As said stones old spanners etc in behind the belly pan

    Thanks Matti,
there's no camper interior, apart from a rock & roll bed, as it's been bought as an ongoing project.Photo attached. Inside view compressed.jpg
I know there should be a belly pan but that seems to have gone west before I got the van!

That's not a bad thing. They hide all sorts of issues!

    Thanks Stan,
sorry didn't see your post before now. I've been given the mother of all grease guns by a friend who sold his Bay a few years ago so will start with some greasing at the front end and have a look at anything which looks or feels loose. There's no interior except for an R&R bed so my suspicions lie with things underneath. It needed a clutch when purchased so the vendor paid for that which means the engine's been out recently and something may have come loose post reassembly, certainly the reversing lights don't work.

  7. Check on the voids under cab seats. Could be tools etc under there? Oh and check the noisy cupboard at the back, mine can make some horrible noises. ;)
