Loose stud in head

  1. Been looking at an engine but by looks of it there are 3 loose studs. Is helicoil a fix or is case toast.
Will this cause issues as planning on 1776çc rebuild but engine is £400 for starters as bare unit.

  2. Helicoil inserts are as good as anything and worth doing if you`re going 1776 .

    Although ....

Just thinking this over , is there enough meat on the cases when they`ve been machined ??

  4. Is it a longblock or turnkey? If longblock not worth £400 like that

  5. You’d be better off using inserts (“case savers”) in the case. Boring out for 1776 will eat into the stud holes anyway.

Worth doing the lot, and using 8mm studs (like VW did )

  6. No my thoughts on cost, prices are all over £600/800 for used turnkey which is probably scrap and some more. Saw a 1300 on ebay and offered £250, seller wanted £600 crazy money. Wish you could get a scooby installed for reasonable money and would put in our beetle and keep camper stock 1600....

  7. Cheers, probably another £150 on the build cost

  8. If you’re going to 1776, it’ll need to be done anyway...

Keep trying. I got an engine longblock off eBay for £51.

It was disgusting, filthy and in Barry, South Wales, collection only.
So it was a longish drive to South Wales from Southampton.

When cleaned up it provided an original AS21 case, with 8mm studs going into OG VW case savers, crank, conrods and flywheel. Water had rusted pistons to cylinders and fizzed away the camshaft gear.

Was used for 30k miles until it dropped a valve from a recycled cylinder head that by that stage had done about 50k miles. I had bought new valves just never got around to swapping them... I now have learnt my lesson. £2400 JK preservation parts engine now fitted. 20190808_124144.jpg
