Loose driveshafts

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by optimistic, Jun 21, 2017.

  1. My driveshaft bolts keep coming loose, did a full checkover after the first 100 miles and they're very loose!

Loctited them and re-torqued them and they lasted longer but again have come loose.

I have new joints that came with cork gaskets which I didnt like the look of as they were quite thick but I used them anyway. They are all new bolts with the spreader plates tightened above the correct torque the second time around.

A quick google mentioned serrated washers which I haven't got with the new parts and weren't fitted before I stripped it down.

Anyone had this same problem and then cured it? Is it the lack of washers?

It will be the missing special serrated locking washers. You did not pay enough for the CV joints.

The cork gaskets should be so crushed with the torque that they should not matter.

  4. £3.95 each  just kampers are royally taking the mick!

  5. I got those joints with cork gaskets and also had them come loose so I ditched the cork gaskets, but reused the spreaders between pairs of bolts, and tightened with a torque wrench. They've not come loose. The spreaders, if you have the joints like mine will need a bit grinding off.

If I'd realised though I'd have paid more for a quality item.

  6. Ditch the cork gaskets. They'll compress and make the joints come loose. Use the spreader plates and new Belleville serrated washers - you need these. Available off eBay. Torque the bolts to 28 lb ft, and there's no reason why they should come undone. Loctite won't do anything as there's too much grease around.

  7. Don't use loctite as it messes with the torque values ..M8 serrated washers from eBay and it should be good to go

  8. Definitely this^^^ you can significantly over torque stuff as the Loctite acts as a lubricant. It can then cause threads to strip as studs get hot.
