Look what I didnt see when I took the Air Filter off.

  1. You can hope that the screw has only just come of and is lodged in the inlet manifold or it was never there.
The likelihood of a screw going through an inlet valve, surviving compression and being spat out on exhaust with no damage caused are remote.
I wouldn't risk turning the motor even for a compression test. youre not going to run the motor without a head off inspection I assume. Most a compression test would tell you is which head to take off, might as well pull them both.
    That screw does look suspect..
    Good Luck

  2. Yeah it does look a bit Mickey Mouse. However it does look better in the flesh and im just glad it stuck around to do its job. Not like its filthy brother whos effed off down the manifold looking for 3sum fun with valves and pistons.

  3. God knows when it fell out. Only took the air cleaner off to squirt carb cleaner in there whilst in Halfords car park. ill check the other is done up before setting off home tonight.

  4. Spoke to the guy and he was fair enough. Told me that they no longer sell the EMPI carb due to quality issues with the idle screw O rings  . Got a screw from another carb and chucked two sets of O rings aswell.

Whats odd is that parking with the NS wheels on the curb it idles ok. Gave the carb a once over and cleaned the kak out float chamber. It ran OK at first but then started to die everytime i took my foot off the gas. Bit disappointed but at least there are two wood screws holding the choke butterfly now.

  5. Have you checked your fuel pump delivery? sounds like this may be the culprit to me.

  6. It does sound like maybe crud in your tank, but this shouldn't get past the fuel filter. There shouldn't be any crud in the float bowl at all.

Is your idle cutoff valve working properly? This will reliably stop the engine idling.

  7. I have been plagued by the cut off solenoid. The one that originally came on this carb kept sticking shut and id have to unscrewit and short it out a couple of times before it retracted. Eventually changed it for the one off my old carb and it seamed to sort it out. It is making a clicking noise when removing/replacing the terminal so i think its good.

Read on the thread about filters about using a magnet in the tank. Might drop a magnet from a hard disk in there.

  9. Isn't it one of those fancy Japanese toilets...?

  12. Have you tried taping a magnet to your fuel filter zebedee dude

  17. Those screws are usually crosscut and spread to prevent them coming loose or falling out if that is your choke have you checked the screws in the main butterfly
    Just a thought

If the screws were as on original they are much flatter headed and they will have been peened over so they would have been almost impossible to undo - I ended up gingerly (if that is possible ..) using an impact driver on mine to undo them to get at the throttle spindle and replace the bushes on the Bocar version (which needs epoxy glue to fix the 0.1mm too-small eBay replacement throttle spindle bushes) . I could hear the air hissing past the spindle, the choke was jamming because someone had hammered the choke bushes in and the little stepped cam would stick.

I got the Bocar carb working OK, after finding crap in the float chamber, and in the fuel filter in the fuel pump.

Not as bad crap as the time I had with a £100 1974 Morris Marina in 1986 when I got it up to 100MPH indicated going downhill past Rownhams Services on the M27 and then found I had petrol pouring out over the engine. The rust in the bottom of the float chamber had jammed the float down....

Having heard of the crap quality of the EMPI clones, I decided to go for a progressive Weber as the next cheapest replacement option. One made in Spain. For which I paid £20 extra. And which doesnt change the insurance.. But it does need tuning.

So I have a working Bocar available now.
