  17. I think I'll pop along (as it's a whole five minutes drive from Epping). Be sure to check out the Spitfire mounted to a pole at the entrance.

    Bit of trivia for you - it was the base for the Norwegian Airforce during the war. They still occasionally fly a Tornado over here for S's and G's. If you arrive via the country lane from North Weald you'll find one of the anti-aircraft pillboxes still sitting in a farmer's field. It would have been a strategic base if the Cold War had turned nasty (there's a communication station for it in the Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon Hatch). Also many of the new-build streets around the airfield are named after RAF aircraft. And finally - I used to go running there when I was marathon training.
