Loft insulation grant, recommendations welcome!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by brucieboy, Oct 18, 2016.

  1. Hi all, I'm after getting my lost insulation done via a government grant and wondered if it was just the joist insulation they do or the eves also? any recommendations in the Sheffield area to carry it out? cheers

Basically they just run about 10" of loft insulation all over the ceiling between the joists and staple some plastic clad stuff to the loft hatch and draught proof it in my experience. Rather them than me though, hate the stuff!

  3. Eves are not usually covered - they are needed for ventilation

You'll find that unless you claim a long list of benefits you won't be entitled to it.
I did it myself (well, I watched @Mattlad do it).
It's not too expensive but well worth doing.

Really? I could have had mine done free last year if I'd had less than 4" already. Income didn't come into it.

  6. I was on a site years ago and one of the labourers used insulation for loo roll:eek:

My dad used to take me to site to labour to his decorators when I was a kid. One day I wondered off bored and found and lovely stack of very soft stuff to have kip in. It was a pile of fibreglass insulation. I have never done it since!

    Not in Bristol.
I called and got given a list of benefits I had to be in receipt of.

It's not an area based thing. It's provided by energy companies desperate to meet their green compliance. You don't even need to be their customer. Once they have done the bare minimum they shut up shop until their lack of green credentials fine looks like being bigger than the cost of giving away more insulation. It comes and goes.

Ok. Maybe I didn't phone them then and get told that to qualify in Bristol I needed to be in receipt of certain benefits. Maybe I dreamt it?

The company I didn't call was British Gas.

  11. I itch even thinking about it.

I've done the same and after checking, right now benefits are required nation wide. But, a year ago, (when I had a house) The only stipulation was having less than 4". Perhaps I imagined the bloke coming round to survey and breaking the bad news. :)

Could have been 18 months ago. I was hoping to hide stuff from buyers surveyors for free and make it look like I gave a feck.

  15. I've just been into my Sheffield loft and checked.

It was done by Viscount Environmental, who i've just googled and are now bust!

Ring the council, they will tell you who administers the scheme

I think you can have it done for free regardless of income.

My sister got our house done for free as she was renting it off us at the time, not that I'm suggesting this might be a way .

Does this scheme not have a list of installation bods who are part of the scheme?
