Locking wheel nut help!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Joker, Oct 14, 2013.

  1. I seem to have misplaced my lock nut adaptor.

So, I thought id check on here if anyone has the same. They came from VW Heritage originally and the pattern looks like this, but I'm guessing they're all marginally different??

If anyone has the same id appreciate borrowing it so I can get the lug nuts off and replaced.

    Thanks
    :)

  2. Can't quite make out from pick, but is it possible to hammer an undersized socket on. Posslble with some types.

  3. No its round. The adaptor has 4 studs on it, the lock but 4 holes. I'm going to try the wheel nut remover from Halfords.

I think I must have left the adaptor in the wheel...

    doh!
    :)

  4. Yes I'll give that a go with its mixed reviews

  7. Is that not the point of a locking wheel nut ? There is going to be tens of different combinations of the same set .

Weld a big nut to it .

  8. Small cold chisel on the edge make a notch and hit it with a big hammer to turn it. It works I've done it.
Or cut a slot in the top with a small cut off disc and hey presto a big screw. It works I've done it

Ps wasn't me that lost two locking wheel nut adapters

the locking wheel nut removers @paradox linked to wont work, yours are to shallow @Joker , your gonna struggle with that unless it wasn't tightened up properly, an option is a piece of tube that fits over and drill 4 holes into it and put some hardened rod in, hey presto new locking nut tool, they are very difficult to drill as they are usually case hardened so use a die grinder or similar to break through the hardening and then drill out the centre. you can also try loosening all the other nuts and driving it around to see if the other will free off enough to get undone with circlip plyers or similar

  12. Ive got a new disc on my 9" grinder lol

done plenty by welding a nut on it, usualy stays on enough to undo it if you want to try that way

  13. Will try anything so long as I don't damage any of the wheels
    :)

  14. Im home at 5 tmrw can give a hand will get them off one way or another

  15. a extractor tap would be good , drill it and the extractor would undue it possibly

  16. Two options weld a nut on to it with a great big dirty weld through the centre of the nut or the preferred option just use a centre punch in one of the dimples to knock it round, a couple of decent hits will soon turn it. Hope this helps.

  17. Can u not hammer an old socket slightly too small over it, this worked for me on a punto once, wrecked the socket tho

I did one by welding and by the time I'd welded, the heat had loosened the nut to fingertight.
