Would love to but you still need money to buy the land in the first place.

It also takes money to buy things so you have to do some work.

Another case of inconsistent application of planning rules. If Mrs Hobbit was a traveller that whole place would be demolished and she would be living back in the real world.

I think it's cool. Good for her if that's what she wants. Not like she's built something she'll be able to sell is it!
I'm going to get halfway there by living on a boat, generating my own elec, providing my own sanitation etc, but TBH it'll probably be more expensive than living in a house...

Ms.T & I have been looking at some properties that are "off the grid".
By that, I mean we would rely on solar panels for our electrical supply, rain water tanks for our drinking water & dams for other uses. We would still need to have internet accesss & mobile phone coverage. Also we would have generators for when we don't get enough sunshine to replenish the battery storage. At least we would keep the mod-cons, no way am I going back to the totally primitive way of life. ^-^

No, not this year unless I can afford to buy the farm my Grandpa used to own I quite fancy being a "gentleman farmer"
If I want to see primitive life I'll go to Rugeley :p

  13. She lives in the woods and they charge her bleedin council tax wtf. I do get a bit achey about these things , i mean she has a degree in chinese and the ol man is an architectural historian, just an excuse for not getting a proper job. Bloody students, and as for calling it spirit this and that, cobblers, whats wrong with calling it f**k you i'm not toeing the line?
I do admire these folk for getting away from working for "the man" even though it doesnt sound like it.

It must have been the cosmic vibrations from the crystals what did it man.

I admire too - why not? A bit less hippy might get her taken more seriously, but I guess she'd just be seen as a pikey then...

Pump out or cassette, which depends on the boat I end up buying. Whichever way, it's gonna be me emptying it. Also the water supply - again limited to what you have in the tank before pootling off to refill it. Power is the biggy though - living off a few leisure batteries, solar panels and running the engine every day to charge the batteries and heat water is going to concentrate the mind. Fine when I'm cruising about in the summer, but in the winter when you tend to get stuck and there's not much sun it's going to be interesting. Fridges and laptops are the killer they say. I'm not going to be on here so much unless I get a phone thing and not going to be popular with my son who lives on the internet, but it'll do us both good I'm sure.

Heat's another problem of course - I won't be plugged in the gas or 240V. Lots of people manage fine though and you know what they say - location, location, location - should be worth it. :)
