Hi all, need to move my resto shell to get work done and seem to be missing one vital bit of steering linkage ... as in the pic (sorry about quality but should be clear enough for those in-the-know :)
Hope someone out there has one!
    Cheers. Link pic.jpg

  2. If its just to move it about i have one, it was sliced open to remove but a blob of weld would fix it, obviously not for road use :)

  3. it's called the drop arm/pitman arm in case you need to know. If you get stuck, i've got one you could borrow.

Hi Keith, thanks for getting back ... Yours sounds like a good bet to get me over this first hurdle.
    Would you need it back??
    Where are you based?

Hi Brothernumberone ... Thanks for that.
Will be useful to have the right name when I look for one to use longer term.
In case Keith's doesn't work out for whatever reason, where are you based?

My bus is a '72 cross (early front bumber, late rear lights for example) ...
Having searched "pitman arm" it appears that there are at least two types,
for pre and post 72/73 ... as in this quote from a US parts site:

    211-415-371BY Pittman Arm March 1955 to 1972 $5.00
    211-415-371CY Pittman Arm 1973 to 1979 $16.00

The attached pics show two types but I don't know which is which.
Guess I'll have to get a look at the box and drag link to see if it's obvious which one I need.
It may just be a case of there being different locking nuts?
    Again from the US site:

    N 11216.2 Slotted Nut March 1955 to 1972 $4.00
    211-405-672 Jam Locknut Early 1973 $2.00 Note: To VIN 213 2195 235 using 22x1.5 thread shaft
    N 11170.1 Jam Locknut Late 1973 to 1979 $3.00 Note: From VIN 213 2195 235 using 24x1.5 thread shaft

  7. Hello Dub and dubber, there are two sorts of steering boxes, the cast iron '68-'72 one which you will have and the alloy '73> one. However I'd always assumed the drop arm was the same except the later ones had two alignment marks for LHD and RHD vans so it could be used on either, but maybe there is a diffrence in the number of splines or shaft diameter. I must admit I've never checked, but I've got a couple of early vans in the workshop so if no one else has the answer I'll have a look tomorrow. The arm I've got is definently from a late 'box. I think the diagram above is just to illustrate what a drop arm looks like, 'A' certainly isn't a VW steering box.

  8. This is a late box, but the drop arm will look the same.

Many thanks once again "BN1" ... anything you can find out will obviously help.
Keith H is within striking distance so in the first instance will probably pick his up and try it out ...
    not least to meet up!

  10. Either of the late ones (on the left) £25 posted

Hi Matt, will text you as well but are the two on the right early ones?
If so am I right in thinking the internal diameter is different?
If so, and if it turns out I have an early box,
is one of these available ?
    Cheers,
    Mike.

  13. Late is an ali box as posted above, early is a cast box and looks very different.

I proably do still have an early arm but will have to check for you as that picture was taken some time ago. Let me know

Having some issues with posting now ... two attempts so far ...
US site quote the early box VW number as:
    211-415-049FX Rebuilt Steering Box 1968 to 1972
The attached (I hope this time) pic at least shares the middle six digits.
    Enough for a match???

  17. The part number 214 415 049 F (in your picture above) is for a RHD prototype bay steering box as the people above have suggested. The 214 denotes RHD.
You've probably confused yourself a bit by looking at an American website where they quote 211 415 049 F which is of course a LHD box, the 211 denoting LHD. The X is their own nomenclature for an exchange unit.

  18. Did you get this sorted or did you still need a drop arm (early?)

Thanks ... guessed the non-matching digits might be US vs UK ... so was taking the middle section as a sign that it is an early box.
Just had a droplink posted by KeithH but think it's a late one ... o_O

As above, I suspect the one KeithH took the trouble to send me is a late one, in which case I'll definitely be needing an early one as I think, judgeing by your photo, at least one end is a different bore .....
I'll let you know as soon as I get a chance to confirm one way or the other!
(It's not "days" urgent ... but would be good to get it sorted in the next couple of weeks.)
    Much appreciated,
    Thanks
