Just planning a winter upgrade to my lighting after one of my additional lights met a messy end disembarking a ferry. Found the below and wanted a second opinion or am I better upgrading the existing lights using a kit like the one below? https://www.vintagewarehouse65.co.u...-conversion-headlights-trim-sidelights-1.html https://www.demon-tweeks.com/uk/ult...6000k-conversion-kit-slimline-ballast-319861/
Item 1 is just light bulbs like you get in Halfords. Item 2 is HID which might get you stopped / fail an MOT for blinding people as the headlamps arent designed for HID. Look at https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/collections/headlight-led-bulbs for pointers to a more compatible solutiion.
I’ll second classic car LEDs. Just fitted the ‘warm white’ H4s (I previously fitted H4 beetle reflectors - if you have an early late bay pre-73/4 and still have the p45 fitting with the Bakelite bayonet retainer ring I don’t know if it’s feasible). Same colour as halogen but brighter. If you go that route make sure you realign the baseplates to the same offset as a standard H4 as they come set at a bigger angle than correct. And fit the fins on the shortest way around. The ballast units do fit into the bowl, just be careful to keep existing bus wiring away from the cooling fins. Driven a few hours behind them and so far so good. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Honestly I’m not sure what’s in there currently had more pressing things to sort but they aren’t great in fact they are pretty useless and it’s bordering on dangerous driving without the additional lights on. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Stock Bay H4s in good shape are just fine - the same as on early Golfs. I suggest you take yours off and check what they are. They may be old tungsten jobs.
Finally getting around to sorting this. These are the lamps I’ve currently got, ordered the cool white ones from classic car leds any tips on lining them up correctly? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Appears you had the old tungsten bulbs and your new ones have the H4 halogen base. You used to be able to get adaptors, but TBH I’d just buy a new set of headlamps.
I got a pair of lamps for the beetle from VWH (same as camper) last year. Special offer. Seem good quality.
Got adapters on the way thanks guys. Classic car led very helpful. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Last time I bought headlight bulbs halogen were available everywhere in both those fittings without any adaptor. I have them in mine.
