right then people tonight im taking the engine out again a doing a complete strip down. Im hoping to get the heads off see how the night goes is there anything anyone thinks i shold look out for/check as i strip it down? Thanks guys its a 1641 engine.
Just look for damaged bits as you go. Keep tidying up, have a few boxes for parts and keep them out of your way. Remove the bottom tinware, disconnect the thermostat and drain the oil while you can get underneath before you remove it from the van.
out n in the garden Il start striping it tomorrow after work see what's what if the crank itself looks ok can i just replace the big end bearings and the shells for the con rods? Also how do i no what bearing and shells i need? Thanks guys up date you all tomoz mrs johnw1666 is sorting me a photo bucket thing for pics
hi zed iv got to remove the pistons and barrels, fly wheel and crank pully then im ready to undo all the nuts and split the case. I left my sockets at work so i haven't had chance to do the work above yet. Hopefully i can get my sockets tomorrow and find the fault. Il keep you posted i noticed another post earlier a guy had a knock from his engine iv read that with great interest. Sounds the same problem i have. Hope its just the big ends.
You can find out if it's a big end right now without tools. Turn the engine back and forth a little and see if you feel a loose bit with "ends". Look at the pistons and see which doesn't move through this loose bit. Pul the barrel off the loose one, remove piston and conrod - easy through the barrel holes and see exactly what state it's in. At this point you might want to consider whether you'll go further of seek help.
ok ill give it ago should there be any play in the con rods iv took the barrel and piston out of cylinder 4 and there seems to be play in the con rod? A little left and right and alot backwards and forwards?
There should be none detectable in and out, a little side to side. Sounds like you found it. You might have to take off the opposite barrel as well to get at the nuts better. There are no washers to drop in the case and everything else is easily fish outable if you drop something inside. You might have to slim down a 15mm socket to get onto the conrod bolts, though that might be T4 engines.
Is the piston still attached? If so a block of wood against the piston and a glancing blow on the wood with a hammer should crack it
ok iv got a couple of ways of getting it apart so ill have ago tomorrow in hoping i don't have to split the case :/
