Persevere with the steel strings, if you switch to nylon you'll only have the same problem when you switch back to steel strings.

I had "The Bert Weedon Songbook" , the cover said "Learn guitar, be a hit at parties".
What it should have said was "Try & learn guitar whilst being hit at parties"
No-one seemed to be impressed by my interpretation of "Camptown Races" at parties
Mind you, that was in 1964 & I blame George Harrison for me wanting a guitar.

I started learning 4 years ago,and yes,for the first few weeks,it does make your fingers hurt.Try a thinner set of strings maybe.
I'm very fortunate in my guitar playing as i can pick up a £10,000 pound vintage guitar and make it sound as crap as one from a boot sale still...A La Les Dawson. :p

  5. When living in London I visited Denmark St, loved how in every guitar shop there was the very large notice saying "If demo -ing a guitar under no circumstances are you to play the following intros" and a list of a lot of very popular /classic rock tracks >also one other notice ,on a cage containing a guitar " do not even think of asking to demo this guitar">>>the list of banned intros ? yup ,me can play them, in fact were fun to do ,once a while back.

  6. I'll ask my lads to send you their tips:)

  8. Earned myself a little chufty badge tonight. Managed to play the whole way along with Johnny Cash "Walk the Line" - bang on time with chord changes and no mistakes. Whoop whoop!

  9. Can you do the deep JC voice, tho' ;)...?

  10. I've had my guitar got a good few years now and apart from a few chords and waltzing matilda i've hit a brick wall. :(

  11. You'll find your technique improves if you wear a pair of Spandex trousers with a small cucumber down the front...

I find a pair of tight denim jeans & a rolled up football sock also works :)

  15. Update from week 4

Callouses nicely building (less pain), chord progressions through E, A, D, G, C, Am, Dm, Em all coming on really well.

Strumming pattern now upgraded from the simple 4 bar to Pumping 8s.

Can play Bob Marley "Three Little Birds", Johnny Cash "Walk the Line", Pulp "Common People", Tears for Fears "Mad World" and a teeny tiny bit of Oasis "Live Forever".

Formed TLB's very own "Beaver Band" with @Dubweiser and very excited about our first public debut at PaleyFest

  16. I can strum dead fast now :p
