Leaking steering box

  1. Hi Guys,
Finally took the plunge and removed my box the otherday 'cos its been leaking out the EP90 like there's no tomorrow and I didn't want it to run dry, as a new one is a tad pricey.
So, there I am with new seals in hand all ready to fix the problem. Trouble is, when I got the old output shaft seal out, I discovered a deep score line running in line with the shaft right through the seal surface area.
So, I cleaned it and smoothed all the crud off best I could and put the new seal in; knowing that it wouldn't last long, but it was better than the old.
Then I remembered from my former life with Land Rovers, that they made a substitute remedy for the hopeless front swivel housing hubs which also used EP90 oil. This was a molygrease/oil combo that most LRs use now, which sucessfully reduces or stops the leaks.
So, that is what my steering box has in it now. Rightly or wrongly it gives great lube but will flow less. (especially past the seal)
Comes in a handy filling/ piping packet, dead easy to fill.
Alot cheaper than a new box!! (mine has no decernable wear and works well)

    Good idea, or no??

  2. Good idea, i must remember that

  3. Needs must, I suppose. Ideally you need a decent seal and oil, as ZF intended.

  4. Hmmm...miscible moly where being the denser particle it still remains in suspension in the oil base rather than slowly seperating from its host and depositing on the surface being lubricated. Retains the shear/plating strength of the oil with the high viscosity of a soft grease. Hows that Snotty :D

  5. Ive heard of a few folk using landy swivel grease to good effect but ive never heard any long term reports

Dont the more modern defenders use a ptfe coated swivel aswell now?

  6. Ok guys, I'll keep you posted. I packed it full and theres no sign of leakage yet. (probably 'cos the oil's so cold..
