Leak

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Mary, Oct 20, 2013.

  1. i have developed a few leaks, my van is on a slop (front high point) which leads me to believe the water maybe getting in from the front and running to the rear until it can find an escape route, i have found a few small holes in the front guttering , will normal filler do the trick or do i need some kind of sealant first, also the skylight is a little confusing....
    thanks

  4. Never stop it coming out but always stop it coming in
If you cant weld fresh steel in then its time for a fiberglass bodge

I had a big leek once

If you can go back to bare metal , filler will work. Leave rust in place and bodge it and the hole will just end up bigger.
But as you get to bare metal , you may find the hole has friends and wish you never touched it. It might be cheaper to spend £100 on a cover for now and explore in the dry season.

I cured an around windscreen leak with some black automotive sealant injected under the edge of the seal with a mastic gun. It really did not fit well after a paint job.

My poptop leaked until I turned the van round to park pointing downhill which also helps the cab doors drain properly, and made sure the poptop latches inside (Devon) were actually pulling down hard so the rubber seal squashed down around the poptop - I drilled up from underneath with a 5mm drill, and put long stainless bolts through from the top, sealed with Sikaflex and with Nyloc nuts pulling up the latch supports.
