Late Devon roof installation

Discussion in 'Introduce Yourselves' started by Phil White, Jan 4, 2016.

  1. Hi,

    Can anyone help me please???

I've got a '72 Bay camper and have just bought a late Devon roof with all (I hope) the fittings with it.

I've started to cut the roof out as per the size of the frame which came with the roof. Can anyone help me with the rest of the installation? Pictures would help as would a phone conversation or I could come over to see your van and roof.

    I live in Aylesbury.

    thanks,
    Phil

  2. Hi Phil...just to confirm, the late Devon roof will have two brushed steel box-section pivot arms front and rear, containing the springs. These attach to the van via steel plates screwed into the bracing, spanning the roof. When cutting the aperture for the frame, leave enough material to form an upstand (c. 10mm)...this will need to be bent to suit the profile of the frame (assuming the frame is L section)....if you've already cut the aperture with no upstand, don't fret...it should be strong enough as is. I'll take some pics later on today as it'll save a long discursive post....

If the hole was cut 17 days ago and there's been no further post maybe not too well...................

The Early 68 to 72 Devon roof has as close as fudge it is to swearing got the same size hole as the 75 76 Devon roof apart from the upstands on the opening. It`s about an inch and a quarter on the Earlies and about a half inch or less on the later ones. Much nicer roof design, and better looking too, a bit like me maybe ,,,,,,

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Or maybe not :p

Oh !!! When fitting the later roof, I used a ratchet strap to compress each of the springs into place, I held the ratchet straps in place at each end with a large re usable cable tie and just did it very very gently one end at a time.

    Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Hope that helps :)
