Late bays and USA spec lighting wiring?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Austin, May 14, 2013.

  1. Both my old early bays i imported from the states, and had USA spec lighting and wiring as you would expect. I.E. indicators / running lights always on, and flashing brake lights and front running lights for indicators.

But are late bays from the usa the same? mine looks to have UK spec rear lenses, thus having a separate brake, indicator and reverse light in the rear cluster.

Or is this all a load or rubbish and i will have to get a new flasher unit and run another cable to the rear to convert my lights as i have done in the past with my EB's?

i know i'll have to change the head lights to UK spec items tho!!

any clues would be great, i need something to occupy my mind until my bus is here NEXT WEEK!! WOOP WOOP!!

rears are uk spec, front amber always on is legal you just need to run a white sidelight to the headlights (get a rhd pair with sidelight holes) done

  3. On a similar note, do you have to have amber rear indicators, mine are red, I could just change the lens but I like the look of them. I guess I could put orange tinted bulbs in to make an orangey red, would that suffice?

Mines passed the mot three years running with sidelights in the indicators & not in the headlights, as far as I know its got the same US headlights in, Ive certainly never changed them - dunno about the running lights always on, its not got those!

  5. Which side of the road do your headlights point :)?

luckily they adjusted ok towards the left hand side, that I do know as its on one of the documents for the first uk mot!

  7. They'll still kick up to the right, tho' . Is your MOT man mentally impaired ;)?

It passes year after year with no advisories on the headlight side of things..maybe slammedresto changed the headlights for uk ones when it landed! I'll ask him :D I know Ive got a pair of hella uk spec lights at work because of the lack of sidelights but it keeps passing ok!

  9. When I got mine it had a mot my first mot the tester put some black tape on the headlights to deflect the beam same as when you go abroad, then I got some uk spec ones,

I think this is a bit of a grey area tbh - one MOT tester asked me where the sidelights were - I commented about it being the US spec lighting & it was from factory, he said fair enough no problem!

It's not a grey area at all. By law you need to have white emitting positioning lamps. You can have your amber side markers to but UK law is white.

    this, mork has been lucky

  13. I'm changing my headlamps anyway so the UK ones will have sidelights built in but mine too has passed 2 x MOT with only the original American orange sidelights.

Ok, if Ive been lucky, Absolute VW's mot man must be dodgy as well then - they use a reputable test centre in Castle Donnington who passed it..I think its the same place Bernard Fishtrousers use as he takes his bus to them too

Anyway, I'm not unduly worried, I have my MOT, if it comes up as an issue, I'll change the lights and adress the problem - until then, I'll use the westy as intended

  15. I agree, I'm only changing my fronts 'cos they're rubbish and old and tired.

I need to have a new front panel fitted sometime soon, I'll get a pair of new ones then - with the correct sidelights, it maybe next year, who knows :D

Wooh. Who says you have a dodgy MOT?? Not me.

Just checked with my chap. You can have a yellow positioning light if incorporated within a yellow headlight i.e. old French car or yellow painted glass like we did when going on the continent. If a car is presented with just the amber side markers he would fail it.

  18. No white sidelights should be a fail.

I haven't found anything in the regs that says amber to the front is naughty, unless you've got no white sidelights.
