Late bay with wheel on front.....

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by leflipflop, Feb 4, 2020.

  1. What is everybodies opinion on the mounted front wheel.. Sometimes I see it and think it's ugly. . Others I see it and feel it looks good and original.... What's the general consensus... Any pros or cons..

Doesn't seem to be much holding it on... 4off rivets I believe?

Early form of airbag with obvious design fault!

other than that it’s a perfect placement if it didn’t rot the front panel

It's convenient...as it frees up space in van.[IMG]

I think a clean front looks better but a rear mounted one would be a PITA for accessing the hot cupboard.

  6. I agree however a previous owner of mine mounted the wheel on the front. I’m used to it now and until I need a new front won’t be changing it. It seems to be one of those things that people expect to see. Nearly all novelty models / pictures etc of type 2’s seem to have a front mounted spare...

  12. Ours is on the front - I like it. We have the westy bracket which bolts through the front panel and has a bracket to take the weight on the front bumper - still wouldnt recommend pushing on it though....

  14. I think they look great but they are the first point of impact, (hang out in front of the bumper) even a light tap could push the cab front in!

I think it looks good. And it frees up space inside.[IMG]

  16. A strong gust of wind would push most fronts in, considering most of them are filler and newspaper!

  17. I'll have you know that many, many years ago when I had a new exhaust fitted & the chap fired it up on the ramps for a listen. It turned out to still be in gear & made a reasonable fist of driving through the corrugated asbestos wall into next doors garage whilst still five feet in the air. Although the windscreen was broken & the aerial written off, the tyre saved it from a lot of damage. Ask me really nicely & I'll let you know the name of the VW specialist!
