Hello I have three in row recessed ceiling bulbs that stopped working one by one. They are small halogen ones which i need to upgrade to LED. All easy so far but there is no 12v feed going to them now and its not a fuse. I suppose it's a driver transformer problem. The added problem is that there is no real access apart from the aperture itself and it's under a flat roof so no access from above either! I will keep the aperture the same so i don't have to replace the actual bulb holders. Just the bulbs and the drivers? They are the small 2" or 5cm diameter bulbs. Any helpful advice on access and which driver pack and bulbs to buy? Cheers once again p.
Luceco downlighters from The Screwfix are nice (as are their outside LED floodlights). Obviously, don’t try and power them from the mains
We had 12v halogen downlights, and one by one the cheap Chinese marmite transformers packed up. I ended up swapping them all for 240v GU10 fittings with LED bulbs. At least the transformer is then built into the bulb and easily replaceable
Try and pull the transformers out through the hole and chuck them in the bin, get some 230v Led downlighters ...sorted
Yes , keep working the flex out and you'll find the transformers, probably one per lamp but sometimes they're piggybacking powering up to four . As above, the 12v festoon bulbs and holders are tosh so replace the holders and everything for 240v led units . Dunno the latest regs 're the fire proof aspect ... There are some quite good 12 volt AC compatible LED reflector type bulbs you can plug in - I have one in a desk light I liberated from a junk box at work a few years back. Fireproofing - quite likely, after all you dont want the cooker fire in the kitchen to spread straight up into the room above through some melty plastic hole in the fire retardant plasterboard. Bear in mind the 240V power supplies for some LED bulbs are even more dodgy than the transformers used with halogens.
I recently fitted some of these in a bathroom and liked them. They have decent space for the cable connections and can have insulation directly on it. https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-fixed-fire-rated-led-downlight-chrome-500lm-4w-240v/2155x
Forget replacing them with more recessed types. Buy some surface mounted cabinet lights to cover the holes - something like this: https://www.toolstation.com/laghett...MIyp6Epv7G7gIVou_tCh1klg_3EAQYASABEgKb-fD_BwE
May as well, you can get fire rated , ip rated, colour temp selection and changeable bezels for less than a tenner ...
I just asked because we've had our cellar converted into a utility room/office and I bought some flush LEDs but the sparky said he couldn't fit them as we had to have his with the fire shroud.
Thank you everyone. It's actually the dinning extension off the kitchen with no story above. Just a flat roof. I'll be using the mains ones as suggested. I've actually used them before elsewhere, but thought I was cheating and wasn't really the done thing! Shows you what I know. So it's very reassuring TBH. Great stuff. Thank you to all.
it gets a bit of a strange area as building regs come into it not just electrical The sparky was wrong as you could of fitted a fire hood to your lights, like these https://www.downlightsdirect.co.uk/fire-hoods-for-downlights.html#description
Thanks, I didn't know that! At least I know better for next time - as I've got a box full of the things.
Don’t forget to not bother with any fancy termination in the ceiling. Just twist the wires together and wrap some old insulating tape around it
Is there a way of carrying on the feed from one transformer to the next with these? Or do you have to put a spur in? I just haven't got a lot of room.
Recessed down lighters are sooo yesterday - a design that took 40 years to realise a fire hood is needed. Anything that needs a fire hood is telling you its probably better to fit something else.
