  1. I'd dream of finding a load of conkers like this.... this was the third tree in a row just littering the place with em!. [IMG]

Was that what you called the ones where all the shell had come away? We called them Cheesers, so I imagine there are some similar regional variations.

I tried it all, soaking in vinigar, baking, burning holes through, none worked.

I used to soak my conkers in vinegar then leave em on the school radiator to harden, not long after that I was sacked from my caretakers job:(

  12. Kids back in the day were doing dogs a favour , they can be are poisonous to dogs . We still pic them up if we see them and use them for other activities ,saying that the kids still seem to be knocking them out of the trees in our parks .?

I introduced two of the boys we look after to the game of conkers this afternoon. Neither of them had ever even seen it, let alone played it before and they are 5 and 7.
They were rubbish at it as well, we’ll be collecting more tomorrow evening and seeing if their aim improves, hopefully they’ll be able to actually hit the conker rather than themselves.

Cheesers up in Newcastle as well. Soaked in vinegar, baked in the oven and also painted with nail varnish. Nowt seemed to work. 1’ers. 2’ers etc. Finding a good stash of conkers was better than finding gold.

  15. Lad at our school actually fabricated one out of concrete inside a real shell. Needless to say he smashed every one's conkers before owning up at the end of the day

It's nice to see how the lower classes amused themselves as children.

  19. my kids collect them (9 and 11) so the house/garden is full of them this time of year. they're unusual though - not many of their friends show any interest - i guess in today's modern internet/smartphone world the attraction of shiny seeds is less than it was in my day

I must admit when we got bored of playing conkers we used to play war and use them as weapons:eek:
