  1. Good Morning All,

I have been watching this site for some time and have decided to join as I feel it will be very useful once we have secured a bus. Maggie and I I are in our late 50s and have decided having tried a holiday in a bus that this is fir us. Since then I have been looking for one on all the normal sites. There are a couple of slight problems in that I am neither a paint sprayer nor a mechanic but I know a man that can.

So I'm looking for a good solid RHD mechanically and bodily sound van and I quite like the idea of sorting the interior out myself but at the end of the day it has to stack up to my maximum budget.

So far all I have seen are sheds the owners of which are asking silly money. As a result of this I have upped the budget to a max of 15 K but we are all looking for a bargain.

We want to be up and running buy the Spring of next year so no hurry yet.

Will keep an eye on your classifieds and if I need help when I find a candidate will shout for assistance.

    Regards from Percy and Maggie

  4. welcome,

im sure you will learn lots from this site.

Late Bays are a great buy.

With a budget of £15k you will be able to secure a very solid bus, but be warned there are some bus's out there which need alot of work and will be advertised for silly money.

With that sort of budget I would always leave some money in the pot for some work as with most of these buses there is always something to do.

Welcome to the forum Percy, enjoy your stay!

With you budget, you should be able to get a really good bus...heres an example of a really nice Westfalia:

Gary (slammedresto) has done lots of work to the bus & I would recommend him as a seller, we bought our westy from him early this year.

Anyway, if you have any questions, post them up & we will do our best to help!

    Welcome to the site Percy.

I'd insist on a photo documented resto backed up with a full set of receipts for the resto (lots of talented home restorers - many of whom own a camera, and each would have a procurement trail of the bits they bouth to restore it).

As a word of caution - ensure the bus in the pics, and the receipts are for the bus you are looking at - its not hard to 'inherit' pictures, and bare shell restos are hard to tell apart - things like does the garage in the pics look like the one the owner has etc etc.

For that amount of money - take a really unemotionnal mechanic who know older VW's with you to be safe.

Good reputable dealers do exist in the VW scene, many of whom offer first class service and buses.

Strategically - I would, having been there and done that, buy the best bus with the least amount of work you can afford, rather than aim for a bargain that needs attention. Keeping these things running will satisfy the tinkerer in you, as will improving it over time. The cheap bus, with the new paint and interior will rarely save you money and can break your heart - parts are getting expensive and worse, many parts really are rubbish reproductions for still silly money - the sheer age of these coupled with your desire for RHD can easily get you something with a tonne of filler and rust well hidden.

Lots of good buyers guides out there, including on this site!
