JK retro awning question.

  1. Bought one of these last year and its pretty good. At the minute I'm in the North Yorkshire dales and it hammered down last night. It kept the water out well enough but I can't seen to fathom how to get it really close to the bus AND get the canopy bit tight enough to stop water pooling on the bit that connects to the gutter. I can get one or the other. Any suggestions

  2. Here's a pic of the gap. If I get it any closer the top bit pools with water

  3. not sure if the issue with the gap is just that you are pitching it a but far away or perhaps using figure of 8 connector rather than pole and clamp method but you should be able to re-peg starting with the bottom of the connection tunnel (near the wheels) you will need these to extend just under the van.

The secret to stopping the pooling on the roof of the connection tunnel is to use fibreglass poles, ie the sectional ones that you would use for a tunnel awning. This results in an inverted U shape for this part and the rain runs off. You could use 1 or two dependant on whats effective. I do this and it works (mines and earlier awwning).

    Hope this helps.

  4. Thanks Dicky. The fibreglass poles sounds like a good idea. Where and how would they fit? At the minute I'm using the pole and clamps

  5. All I do is bend them int a U and they are just held there. You could have a strap across for them to slot into but ive never felt the need.
I put the awning up first. Put the pole together and slide in underneath from the side with it attached to the van. Bit tricky till you get the hang and spose if your clamps arent tight it might try to push the pole out of the gutter - not an issue with mine as its a viking and the pole just rests snugly under the "overhang".

We had the same issue with rain pooling in the connecting bit between the bus and awning (Khyam Motordome Tourer), using pole and clamp, we just disconnected the connecting bit when it rained. Bit of a faff I know, but we'll be rid of the awning soon anyway. We've just been using a tarp as a sunshade, with a windbreak to cordon off our cooking area, works a treat, smaller to pack, and much more sociable if you get on with your camping neighbours :)

  7. We had the same retro style awning from JK, we stuck a pole up in the middle of that bit with a tea towel wrapped around the end to stop it poking thru the fabric!!

We never bother connecting the awning

  9. Great combination!

It's all about the distance. Get it spot on then I put some pegs in by the front & rear drivers side tyres, you can then use these as markers when you next drive up to the tent.

Regarding collecting water, I've never been able to stop this without the use of poles. As a quick fix you can use the two that are supposed to hold the opening window bit up. You'll need a bit of wood or a brick to make them the correct height but it does stop the puddles collecting.
