Jalouise windows, refurbing over the winter

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by z4alfie, Jan 4, 2014.

  1. I bought the replacement winder mechanisms for my flappy loose jalouise windows over the summer and I'm going to take them out tomorrow to fit them. Anyone done this? Comments welcome in advance

  2. The bits on either side that open and close it?

  3. Yes, the little mechanism that the handle fits into

  4. Ah I didn't take that bit off, Just the arms that the louvre attaches too.

  5. Looks like I'll be doing a guinea pig 'how to' guide

  6. Looks like rivets though, I'd drill one out and try and get a new fixing method before taking the whole thing off, That's what I did with the arms.

  7. Mine didn't need doing. Looks simple if the new bits fit right and a quick job compared to the rest of the refurb if you're going to strip, clean, polish and re-seal the lot.

  8. Went into the garage this afternoon, looked at removing the window, was freezing cold, fingers felt like they would drop off, came back inside......... So how easy is that outer rubber seal to put back in then?

  9. the outer seal is no problem, far easier than a standard window seal, although you do need someone holding the window in from the outside while you put the screws back in from the inside.

Do not be tempted to renew the window seals unless (a) they are completely shot or (b) you have the patience of St Peter himself. I invented new swear words trying to get the new seals round each of the 3 windows.:mad::mad:

Could you post up the new swear words?

  11. Well, there was ********, ***** *********, as well as ****** **** ********* ***** and of course the obligatory ***** ********.

Sorry, the swear filter got them all. ;)

  12. There are several videos on YouTube (I believe one guy did a 17 part renovation of his jalouise windows!!!) and I think @Chrisradioman did a thread on here somewhere about it (although I cannot find it). I agree with Baybirmingham. If your seals around each window pane don't leak, then leave well alone. All the other seals on the frame, along the top and around the frame are much more manageable. If you are taking the windows out it is worth giving them a polish. The dirt that comes off them is unbelievable. I used one of these......

It's quite time consuming to do all the nooks and crannies but they come up really well once 40 years of crud has been removed. Take care with the drill though, I broke my finger while doing it, but that's another story!

  15. Invalid link..........and there I was, all poised

  16. Found it, it was next to "mowing the lawn (part1), 2011"

  17. That's
the one should be three vids I think

  18. Easy when you work out how to do them, it's the polishing that's a pain.

  19. Just check the fit of the screws into the channel before starting. They are self tappers and some can not tighten very well on replacement. It just needs the channel nipping up a bit to let the screws bite, but you can only do it when the window is out.

  20. I cleaned mine a couple of years ago while they were out, using the tin foil and physics method. Worked a treat, hardly any effort.
