I've Got the Horn - Part 2

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Owen Snell, May 7, 2013.

  1. The first fault turned out to be a chewed up wire earthing near the base of the steering column, so that's fixed OK. Now there is a second horn fault, causing the horn to come on when the ignition key is removed. Could this be the steering lock somehow making the circuit? Is there something that can go missing / come adrift that would cause this fault?

  2. No idea but the problems reared its head again on mine - thought id sorted it but changed my steering wheel ( like for like) and its back. Where was your "chewed"

  3. Wire chewed at the base of the column. I got a sparky to run a new cable down, put it all back together and now this problem. I'm not paying someone to fault find it as it could end up taking ages, so the horn can be disconnected for a while. Someone must have seen this before (I hope!).

    I found this:

    http://www.type2.com/library/electris/sterhor1.htm

I think this might be the relevant section:

That wire from the horn button, which travels down the steering column, MUST go THROUGH the hole in the center of the rubber coupling disk, and be attached to the bolts on the STEERING BOX side of the coupling - this bushing is basically what isolates the steering schmeck from the rest of the car; when you push the horn button, you are completing the ground circuit thru the bolt and then thru the steering box to the frame. If you connect that wire to the steering COLUMN side, it ain't gonna work. Bentley does not tell you this. Muir does not tell you this. Archives didn't mention it. Bob Hoover didn't know. Clymer, Chilton, nope. Which is silly, coz its the most import thing here.

When your horn won't shut off, its because that wire is grounding to the column somewhere. Which is analogous to connecting the wire to the wrong side of that bushing!

The wise and experienced guys will be on later if the above is miles off....

  5. Should the horn be on ignition live on all bays ?

Would have thought so. I've never had a car where the horn works without the ignition on I don't think.

  7. Ta chaps - will have a butchers if I can get the danbed screw out of the bottom cover

  8. There's also a bit about the horn working with the steering lock lower in that article, a bush gone awol / disintegrated. Could be the problem as well.

Better point - never read that far, too busy in work to shirk that much - blatant lie, I got bored and stopped reading.

  10. I'm never too busy at work to do a bit of shirking.

The horn has been put on the wrong fuse
The horn should be on fuse 12 a ing on live

  12. Does this mean the horn is only live when the ignition is on?

  14. Half fixed it with a feed that is switched with the ignition, but now the indicator is setting off the horn. Not in sync with the flasher, just continuous. Horn disconnected for now, any ideas gratefully received.

  15. Are you sure the feed's purely switched by the ignition?

  16. I'll have to look more carefully, but for now it's disconnected pending other issues!
