It was supposed to be so easy - when van hire goes wrong

  1. This morning I was up early and hired a massive Luton van to go and pick up some fence panels from a friend in Horsham.

Got the van at 8am and was in Horsham by 9am ... Excellent I thought to myself - I will be back in no time and can spend the day in Brighton at the Breeze.

But come 9.30 - fully loaded - the hire van would not move.

My friend hit the starter motor with a baseball bat and it started :) wooo

But then as I was lifting the tail gate up the van died - this time no joy at all.

So called the hire company who called out the RAC .... A couple of hours later a very grumpy RAC man found the issue.

The battery in the van was not clamped down and as I had been driving it had been hitting the engine body and the positive lead had come lose and the battery was going flat as it was not charging.

So he got me going and I eventually made my way home and uploaded the van and took at back at 1pm - a fair few hours later than I had hoped.

Made it to Breeze later (pics to follow) but it was a real pain ... The van was in a bad state right from the start so I will be asking for a full refund as it was shocking service and disrupted my whole morning ....

Thats hired Transit's for you. See my icon photo!

  3. Haha - it was a bit of a beast ...

  4. Been there done that, we had a hired transit to go to germany in "best on the fleet mate" what a pile of poo. Broke down in Hanover, snapped belt, sat all night in a car park waiting for the garage to open , got on the road about 4pm then it broke down on the way back. Mind you we clocked up so much overtime sitting on the forecourt it was worth it.

  5. I'm surprised you got a V reg one - aren't hire vans usually less than 5 years old?

Thats why I always use a big company not a back street (no name on van) one.

  7.
  8. Well I got a full refund so the adventure any cost me £18 in fuel and I managed to get £100 of fence panels for free - so not too bad

When we moved house we hired a newish Avis petrol Transit Luton van. It stank because it had been filled with rubbish bags or something. And after one of the slowest trips ever from Crawley to Southampton I filled it with petrol. And the filler hose split and it poured petrol all over the ground messing up the tarmac outside the new house as I left it parked on a slope.
. So next day it went off on a transporter and we went back to Crawley by train.

The moral - George Daley hired vans from the big names too...(this was 1990)

  12. eek! when i have to hire any vehicle i spend an age going over/under/thru it , noting everything and getting same cross signed off (not that i dont trust the hire co. !)well done for getting a result!

  13. Theirs a moral here somewhere if you need anything moved for nowt but the fuel get a number from marowak.
