So you think being a old fart is funny do you ?

Okay so i am an old fart and today i decided it was time to put some more cable ties on my heating pipe insulation - easy job .

Firstly i decided not to open the pit as there is plenty of room below the van for me to squeeze under , did i mention i had a pit ? no , well i do ! , the wood that covers it is heavy so for small simple jobs like putting a few new cable tie's on the pipe insulation i usually don't bother lifting them - wish i had now .

secondly it was cold in the garage so i thought i might put the fan heater on , i placed it conveniently aside of the van right below the oddments shelf -mistake number two .

Mistake number three was cajoling my aged frame onto the freezing cold floor and contorting myself into a shape akin to a upside down warthog and heaving myself manfully under my van and forgetting the cable tie's - the second time i forgot the snips and the third time i left the cable tie's again ?.

After half an hour the circulation in my fingers began to come back sufficiently for me to actually slide the end of the cable tie into the corresponding slot and drag it tight with the pliers , result - one done three to go - i had only taken one cable tie down below with me that time so again i had to contort myself out of the crevice that is the underside of my van - i emerged just in time to receive a nice warm brew from she who must be listened to - " i will put it on this shelf !"she say's and departs swiftly back to the warmth of the kitchen , i in my haste to get more cable tie's and the job done thanked her without thought and carried on almost as if no one had said a word - back in the bowels i went about my job and succesfully fitted the three remaining ct's , job done time for that now cold brew .

As i heaved myself up i grabbed hold of what i thought was the side of the tumble dryer " wrong " it turned out to be a long plank of wood that was leaning up against the tumble dryer , i let go as soon as i touched it and felt it move and it fell , against the shelf where i keep my oddments and cup of tea , the cup of tea fell onto the electric fan heater and the fan heater popped and flashed at the same time as the garage circuit board popped and flashed , i turned sharply to look at the circuit board and banged my head on the shelf , she who must be listened to shot into the garage to see what was the matter and kicked my prize mug - smashing it into bits -

i am now about to go out and fix the circuit board in the cold - nursing a sore head and watching for shards of pottery on the garage floor .

it was supposed to be a easy job !

  10. I think we have all been in similar situations, few winter jobs. no worries will be great to get them out the way. replace ball joint boots, turned into replace 1 ball joint in small garage. curled up in all angles. next thing cramp kicks in. can't get the light off the head torch where I want to point it. 6 weeks later can still feel strange angle my knee was in...hey but at least the light nights are upon us.

I get so angry when I get into a cramped space and realise I've forgotten the one tool I needed to take with me in the first place ha ha

  16. Actually I have to do a very similar job this bank holiday. I have to insulate all the pipework running from my radiator to the heater matrix under the floor and put a front bellypan on. Cable ties, pipe lagging and that silver insulating bubblewrap are what I have to not forget before I crawl under the van. I'll guarantee at least one will get forgotten.
