It doesnt happen very often, but...

  1. i am completely baffled by this one!

type 1 1600 engine. new 34 pict 3 carb. 009 dizzy. points and condenser. elec fuel pump. valve clearances set to 0.15mm cold and points gap to 0.4

the engine doesnt seem to be firing properly on no.1 and no.2 but it does run. the right side of the engine does not get very warm and the small pipe from the exhaust to the inlet is warm but not too hot to touch
tried to put a timing light on it but the strobe wont flash. so i thought the light may be duff but it works on another car. put the pick up from the strobe to the coil lead and it flashes like crazy, back on no.1 and nothing. tried it on 3&4 and it works, on 1&2 nothing or a very intermittent flash
points, condenser, plugs, leads and cap have all been replaced. coil and distributer has been swapped from a running car
here's the odd bit... remove the no.1 lead from the cap so it arcs and the timing light flashes away great and the engine runs better
put more plugs in and the light flashed for about 5 seconds but stopped again
so i thought maybe the other new parts could be faulty. swapped it all from the other working car and its the same
cranked engine with cap off to check spark at the points and its a weak scattered spark, not a crisp clean spark
so i am stumped for now

  2. I had a condenser that went bad and it gave me no ends of problems, loosing power through out the drive until 50KMs was max. speed, etc. . This sounds like it may be in the dizzy, I'd try checking the points gap say on both #1 and #3 cylinders to see if they are the same. could the cam lobe be warn on one and not the others, or could valves need setting on one side??? Just thinking out loud, may help!

  3. i got a accu spark dizzy you could try mate if you want

  4. I once had a new set of ht leads and one of them was duff. Worked ok if you bent it at a certain angle ( not on the plug) but when it was attached to the plug it must have had a small break in the cable somewhere.

Try moving the leads around and see it the trouble moves with it.

  5. Pull the distributer and check it for wear sounds like the most probable culprit, or could it be some kind of bad earth on that side?Sounds a bit weird but the plugs need an earth to fire, other than that 'i'm ooout' (of ideas) thats my best Duncan Ballentine impression ;)

  6. yeah, thats the problem. dizzy has been swapped for 2 working ones. i even put a jump lead from the engine to battery earth to elimate that. i cant work out why its only 1&2 affected.
    my head hurts!

  7. Have you tried a lead of some sort direct to the 1-2 head, or a multi meter to test continuity between that head and and the block and the battery?

  8. Hello. i'm new on here but not new to buses. What about the plugs? i've had them with cracks in before causing this kind of trouble, (causes the HT voltage to short out to ground rather than causing a spark. This might also explain the weak/odd spark at the points?

  9. Another thought ! could be your HT leads shorting somewhere? on that side.

  10.
  11. Oh bugger! what about the rotor arm? Ive had a cracked one of those( could be a tiny hairline crack)causing all sortes of trouble.

  12. all changed

  13. If the plugs are sparking out of the head ok and when you put them in it is intermitten ,it has to be a airleak or some sort of valve troubles..

  14. Comp test 1 and 2 see what you get (did problem occur after servicing) also check firing sequence (order) if youve gone from standard dissy to 009.(in fact check it anyway as thats what it sounds like to me)

  15. Sorted??
