Is this normal for the doors ?

  1. I have read before about water getting inside the doors which is why you need the plastic membranes on the doors before fitting the cards, but I got in today to have a nose around the van and found this.

    These are pics of inside the doors where the water seems to be 'pooling' on the cross member.

    I'm guessing this is why @paulweeding suggests a flap before the membrane in @popestar63 's Miss Daisy thread ? Does the flap tuck behind the crossmember or just sit inside it ?
    Is this pretty normal though ? As you can see I have Waxoyl inside the door and I will be fitting membranes but I do not want to put new door cards on if this is a real problem.
    Here are some pics of the scrapers on the outside. There are some gaps but I guess removing and refitting may well make it worse and if again, this about normal, then there is not much point in disturbing them.

  2. Look pretty normal to me. I doubled up on the membrane with the first one having flaps that just sit in side the channel to help guide the water off the door cards and the second skin was complete and covered the whole door. Hope this helps
     
  3. Looks pretty normal. The scrapers let a lot of water in and it pools in the upper straight bit, which is why a thourogh Waxoyling is a must. The only drain hole in the door is at the very bottom, so the door won't drain unless the van's pointing downhill. It's a pretty crap design.

    You must have the membranes. You'll need to cut a flap (or add an extra bit) that hangs behind the door vent (the originals were double-skinned to do this). If you look at the door pressing right at the vertical rear edge, you can see a slot in the pressing that the membrane hangs through, so it's behind the vent.

    If the membrane's not present, water will come into the van through the vent.

    wont simply drilling more holes in the bottom of the door prevent this?
     
  7. Nope, because the rear upper edge of the door bottom would drain into the van interior, rather than the cab step.

    Not VW's best design...
     
  8. Have spent ages trying to get my doors to stop leaking water in to the van. I've tried all sorts, including renewing all the scrapers and putting multiple linings inside the door with flaps going behind the air vents etc, and still I have water all over the top of the wheel arches by the seats every time it rains.

    So, am watching this thread avidly in the hope someone comes up with some wonderful suggestion!

    I've got to take my door cards off again soon anyway to do a few bits and so am hoping I have some more ideas of things to try by the time I do this.
     
  9. Cheers guys. I went back out and made some temporary flap that has helped already. I have tucked it behind the horizontal bar at the moment but when Ido it properly I think I will let it hang into the bar as it seems sensible to keep the moisture away from the door skin seam. Here's a pic of the flap in action for anyone reading this later that wondered what we were on about. The water is now running away from where the door card would be.

  10. The "flap" should actually be at the back, where the air vent is.

    If you've got no door cards or membranes at the mo, you are going to suffer, if only by splashing water.
     
  11. I've put the flap right along the door and I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that it is dry when ever I drive it. At least until I have finished the doors.
