Is there a seal around 1700 engine inspection hatch?

Hi all, the inspection hatch in the top of my engine bay on 1700 type 4 engine 1973 Westy rattles a little and does not shut tight. Should there be a seal around the hatch or opening?

Yes around the opening.

 

indeed yes...both my late bays had one...just a plain rubber spongy seal around the opening. im sure anything would be ok. would stop fumes and a rattle...would it need to be flame proof im not sure. but in short...yes
