Is the fuel gauge earthed?

  1. Fuel gauge on my westy works OK (apart from the fact a full tank registers between 3/4 and full) but when you put the headlights or wipers on or use the indicators the needle flicks up and down with the lights.
I assume its a duff earth somewhere and that the guage is earthing through the light switch or something.

Is there supposed to be an earth cable somewhere?
Its the early type with the tube shaped sender in the tank and no vibrator can thingy on the back of the guage.

  2. For a t2 late ...
Theres a small screw very tiny . Behind ,on the guage turn it in to adjust to higher reading ,
Remove all. Nuts and clean the posts.very important too.
Do not fill your tank unless you know you have all the fuel lines in the tank compartment changed .!

    .including the filler neck ....
Earth is in the tank compartment .

  3. Its the early type of guage and sender so no adjuster i can see. Looks like this:

I'm assuming the tank sender will just have an earth wire from one of the mounting bolts though i've no idea where the other end attaches. Can't remember seeing one last time the tank was out but it wouldn't work without would it?

  4. because the fuel gauge sender has a rubber ring , it has to have it's own earth..

  5. Its got one then. Maybe its a little rusty and not a great connection. Will clean any i can find and see if it makes a difference.

It does not have an earth, but it does share a live with the other dash stuff that all use the same pod earth. Your pod earth is dodgy so they are using the path to earth through your gauge, back to the sender, through that and to earth. Just same as your rear lights go haywire when the earth there is u/s. :)

  8. Theres an earth connection on the bottom of the main guage surround which has a couple of brown wires attached. No idea where on the van the other ends are though.:0
