Ireland, would you go ????

  1. Well we have just come back from a long weekend in Dublin and had a lovely time, lots of nice bars, great music and ahhh yes, let's see you with ya pants down.

Have to say, I have never been so ripped off in my life.

1st reason. Taxi from airport to hotel £20 , then same taxi firm hotel to airport £34 cause it was Sunday .

The bars , well a round of drinks (pint of guinness and a small wine) ranged from £10 upto £13.

I know Ireland is in the mire financially, but this is not really going to encourage return business, cause that's the last of my hard earned they will see.

I feel ripped off a lot of places abroad now, for that reason we have decided to stay in the UK in the van this year. We are going to strike all the kids school holidays off, be ready to go and when the sun shines jump in the van and when he weather gets bad come home and wait, then go again, might be doing a lot of waiting.

  3. That's just what I said to the mrs on our return.
The bus will now be ready to roll at the first sign of decent weather( ie) no snow.
I felt like I was been publicly robbed..

  4. I wonder if this is just capital city syndrome though - like London - they know people will come there so get away with charging whatever they like. Maybe other bits of Ireland are cheaper (don't know, never been - just thinking out loud really).
I went for a weekend years ago - always wanted to go back .. looks like I'll have to save up for it!
Hope you had a good time otherwise -it's a lovely place.

Ireland has been expensive for years; long before the current economic decline started.
Years ago Dublin was a great place for a weekend, now its £8 a pint and you can't move for Eastern European beggars outside every bar!
Now that a Euro is practically a pound its getting crazy expensive. Just go somewhere without the € and you can still get great value holidays.

  6. Funny I just returned from Heathrow last week, took a night in London and it wasn't that bad - stay away from the big brand chains, go for local and you will be fine. You can tell the recession has hit even London area, a lot of stuff you used to get as standard now costs extra. Shop around, but yes heard Dublin is very expensive , ironically it should really be cheap like all the other Hen/Stag/p** up centres, Prague , Blackpool, Krakow!

Prague cheap? I find that most people who tell you how its 80p a pint haven't been for 10 years, if at all.
Unless you drink in the dive local bars its £5 - £6 a pint!

  8. no I have not - maybe I am behind the times, maybe its just the flights that are cheap (before tax)! Perception eh - like thinking Kia and Hyundai cars are cheap - but they are not!

  9. We used to love going to Dublin.Proposed to Mrs K there, before the Euro  After the Euro prices seemed to go a little high.We loved going to Edindurgh after that.Prices always seemed reasonable there.Though we haven't been for a few years.

    Exactamundo!
Stupidly expensive when you get there!

  11. Edinburgh is my second home I love it! If I could I would move there but then no need for a van -pointless having a car if you work there. All coutries that accepted the Euro as their currency went expensive, I noticed it most in France, before then it appeared to be cheaper.

    Anyway back to work.................

  12. Yes I think they all rounded up once they got the Euro and it got worse from there. As you say, back to work.

I have been going regularly for years. When you could get 1.5 Euros to the £ it was pretty good but as the £ has got weaker the prices over there have stayed the same , or that is how it seems to me. It is not worth buying anything there that you can get over here, you pay 10-20% more.

  15. We went to Prague years ago, and I'd programmed the exchange rate into my phone so we could work things out easily. The exchange rate was 40-1. We then went again only a few years ago, and the rate had moved to about 26-1, we couldn't believe it. Made the trip much more expensive - the first time around we stayed in a 5 star hotel!!

Thank goodness we live in Australia & our dollar is so strong at the moment, so that when we come over everything will seem so cheap :p

  17. Yes, Ireland has always been expensive, but it has now become ludicrous. We used to go for the day from Birmingham when it was cheaper to fly to Dublin for the day on RyanAir than it was to get a coach down to London for a Saturday out shopping. Last time we went was about this time last year, and we've now agreed that we won't be going again, it's too expensive for what it is. OK, so it's a capital city, woo-hoo. But there isn't enough of what interests us there, and so we won't bother again.

  19. You lot must drink in some pricy establishments in Dublin, I rarely pay over 5 Euro for a pint of Guinness in Dublin including city centre pubs (not Temple Bar, wouldn't go drinking there anyway).

My other mate has just come back from Perth where he had been working for 5 yrs, he is in the local drinking like a fish laughing at how cheap it is.
