Insurance - young/new drivers

  1. Can anyone out there help? My 20 yr old son has just passed his test today and I was hoping to insure him on the camper van. Finding it very hard to get anyone to quote. VZI will insure but ONLY if he is the registered owner and then its £1800 on a limited mileage of 8000 per year. I'm reluctant to transfer it into his name. Other companies wont insure campers, others wont until he is 25 etc. LV will only quote on campers if you have your other cars with them and they wont quote until you have your other cars actually insured with them. Can anyone help/suggest some options? Thanks.

  2. Can nobody offer any advice on this? Please?

  3. Hi i dont have any first hand experience insuring a camper for a youngster but youll need a specialist insurer , try towergate risk solutions in milton keynes, not saying they will but they take on alsorts of cover situations.Good luck it would be better for him to "own it" and insure it with you as the second driver maybe?? also it will help to get his no claims down too. Good luck, also if hes just passed his test make sure you give him some good advice before he drives it should you get insurance for him cos they do require a bit of thinking time to drive as you know ;)

  4. The problem is insurance companies think if you add a youngster as a named driver and put yourself as the main driver, your never actually going to drive the vehicle yoursrlf and are only doing it to get your kids cheap insurance so therfore don't want to insure you at all.

I dare say there are people out there that do this but unfortunately for genuine cases where they will only drive it as a second driver you loose out.

The only thing you can do is keep trying different companies, its a long process but you'll find someone evenyually who will give you a half decent quote. I'm only insuring myself and my girlfriend but am with Carole Nash and have always found them helpful, might be worth asking for a quote. Look them up online, they are mostly a bike insurance specialist but also do normal car policys and also do classic car policies.

    Good luck.

  5. Direct Line gave us the best deal on our Skoda when we wanted to add our daughter. A lot of companies weren't interested as we have a few cars and always assume you are fronting for your offspring. She is genuinely an occasional driver and earns NCB as well for being on the policy.

Carol Nash is a good call too, might be worth a try.
