Installing windows in panel conversion

  1. Hi All

I replacing the rear windows after a refurb. Can anyone give some hints are the easiest way to do this. I will be reusing the seals as they are all good. Does the seal go on the window first, or do I install seal first then push glass in?

    Help appreciated as always!

seal to glass first. Use window cleaner spray as a lube. Use a thick string about 5mm thick threaded in to the outside of the seal once the seal is on the window, get someone on the outside with a window carrier sucking tool thing to hold the window in the hole, then you go inside and methodically pull the string toward you which will displace the inner half of th seal onto the inside of the van skin, and you just have to persevere that way. Bit of palm banging from the outside is normal to persuade it in. Just dont use a hammer, and dont bang it too far or it will go through and you will have to start again. I would recommend using black tiger seal in a silicone gun and feeding that in side the seal from the outside of the van, to help the seal as panel van windows are renowned for leaking.

  6. Hi mine is a panel convertion these were right pigs to do on mine ,The only way I could do it was to put the seals on the van first slide the glass in the bottom and side as far as I could ,then used a fairy liquid and water mix to lube and carefully and slowly prised the rest of the rubber lip in with two flat screwdrivers .I know I will get slated for doing it this way but it works just be very careful I used this method for all three windows and my louverd window .Before I worked this out I had the autoglass man out after an hour he gave up and went on another job ,so it was a case of trial and error but it worked

I did the same as Latexkat only without the fairy and water. You don't want this getting trapped between rubber and metal. Use something like WD and clean up after. It's a pig of a job and took me hours with help. I was using new seals and from what I've read since there are better ones about than what I used. There are some which lip further onto the glass, mine only just hold the glass in which is why I had so much trouble fitting them. Normal procedure IS seal to glass then fit, but this was never going to work with mine.

Sorry but if this is a panel conversion with rubbers that have an insert on the out side then it's rubber on metal, glass in to rubber then insert!

  9. Do you need the the rubber insert I think I have enough to do a van and the tool if i can find it. Its the black rubber not the shiny stuff. I cant use it , mine doesnt have any windows.

  10. Its a panel conversion so you think insert rubbers first onto van then glass in after?

Also do i remove the rubber bead before inserting?

Yes rubber onto van without the bead, then glass into rubber, work your way round with something like a flat screwdriver but preferably not metal, say a plastic bike tyre lever then last the bead goes in.

  15. rubber on the van then insert the glass the best you can then the insert last, but you will need an insert tool for that thease are cheap enough its like a bent piece of wire with a small wheel on
    hope this helps
p.s you wont find anything for this type of window on youtube I looked for hours ,just take it steady and be patiant

  16. I got my info when I did mine off the thread iris the panel van conversion

  17. @snotty will be along soon to tell you you should have maverick or some other Apple tat.

  18. OK. with no assistance i decided to give it a go on me own, as i want to roll to volksworld tomo. Bead out, rubber round glass and lube'd to the max, suction grabber in left hand pulling string on right.

Its in. Im rather chuffed. 1 down, 2 to go.

  19. Has anyone actually cut their window out?, got my glass and taped the seal on, made a template of the window so will add the thickness of the rubber seal on, was wondering how much 'wiggle room' to add on top of that?, ie non so tight as, 1-2mm, 3-5mm etc etc, any info would be great before i start cutting!, cheers chaps

  20. burnzdog, have you thought to video it and be the first to upload it to youtube to show us nervous types how it should be done!!!
