Inlet manifold aluminum gaskets and sealant

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by OrangeVW, Jul 28, 2013.

  1. Hi

I had a few air leaks between my carbs and manifold and manifold and the heads.

I fitted the aluminum gasket like this but I wasnt sure which way they should be fitted raied part to the top or bottom?

Also are these better than the card gaskets?

Do you use sealant on the manifolds too? I have cleaned all of the faces on the manifolds and the carbs with some wet and dry sand paper now so they should be a clean mounting face.

    Thanks

I use those without sealant. Perhaps the manifold is distorted from previous over-tightening? Put against a sheet of glass and see if it rocks.

  3. ^this. Are the faces perfectly flat? The ally gaskets should be fine - I normally have the bulgy bit upward. I'd doubt if you can reuse them a lot of times, as the bulge'll be crushed.

  4. Thanks I'll try that I used a steel rule and I saw a slight gap one side before wet/dry treatment. Also took some meat off the manifolds so I can get a proper spanner on them.

If you put your sandpaper on a piece of glass you can sand it flat if you're it doubt, and the sanding marks on the face as you go will tell the story. I've found I can't judge the flatness with a steel rule due to the large holes in it.
