@#$^ing oil leak!

  1. Looks like showing somewhere near the bottom of cylinder No1...

Push rod tubes look ok.. any other likely cause a little puddle from a 10s pre break in test?

    Dripping onto here..

  2. Warm oil can go along way and a small amount can look huge. Just check rocker cover gaskets etc first. Maybe simple.

  3. Just about to break it in gave it a quick run to check got a small puddle.. it's running down the case side not head side.. guess i should have run it out of the van.. ah well out it comes again I guess.

When I first rebuilt my type 4 I had several oil leaks. I couldn’t believe it because I used all the right new parts and took loads of care. Ended up using sealer on the rocker covers and giving all the push rod tubes a couple of twists. Also had a leaky oil pressure switch.

I've never run an engine out of the van. I gamble and totally install everything then start it the next day in case I have a lightbulb "forgot that" moment which does happen.

Is this the one where you had to mess around and get the case decked straight?

  6. That wasn't me I don't bother checkng things that far.. as long as they're the same(ish) deck height .. guess I might need to though eh!

Seems quite a goodly leak for 10 seconds. Would that much oil can have come round the barrels in that time?

  8. Gave it another quick spin, no spark on, to see if I could see anything.. nothing then gave it a quick busts with ignition connected nothing straight away but then after another trickle ... no obvious holes in the case above that spot so either case nut or barrel.. either way is back out next week once there's space in the garage again!

Most likely the barrel and that’s a lot of oil, it should be obvious to see once you get access. At least it’s not the strainer bolt.:)

I hope your simply bearing double seal doesnt leak. I’m fitting mine tomorrow

  11. I'll take a peak behind the flywheel when it's out .. not really much of a test yet though

  12. On my type 1 engine there is a small gap at the bottom of the bell housing that allows oil to get out if the crank to clutch seal is weeping. Easy to spot the oil from underneath the bus.

  13. Doh!

    There it is..

What else would I be doing on a lockdown Saturday anyway...

Apart from ..... radio, eberspacher, front wiring, seats, the rest of it.. etc

    I probably shouldn't laugh... :)

    Nice linkage bracketry.
Mine ended up further back, yours looks a bit taller. Mine doesn't play completely nicely with the HT leads. I'd love to see yours from above with all in place (even loosely :) ).

Have you missed a crank case bolt? And maybe IIRC put that bolt through the lifting hole?

  16. Lifting hole?. And yes one case bolt missing from being in and out with that linkage.. best go find it.

It's a smidge high was trying to get linkage level

And could possibly be a a bit further forward to be exactly between throttle levers but close

    And a bit closer...

    Excellent photos, thank you.
What are the things on your carbs, like 90 deg velocity stacks? They look almost like you could fit a T25 airbox on them.

In my head there's never a bolt in that top hole. That one and a hole down the fan end let you lift the heavy thing with a hoist and chains, I used to do it, but it's possible I took the bolt out. When I saw the bolt missing under I put 2 +2 together, assumed you thought you'd lost a bolt while knowing you couldn't have...you know. It also made sense that where you DID fit the bolt the case is thicker with no space for a washer.

Here's mine built by a professional Nowt in the top hole. Pretty sure that's correct and matches what I thought I knew!

    More...no bolt in the top...

  18. The carb tops come on alfasud carbs and are like a 90° bend velocity stack, with a breather pipe connection built it.. I have seen an Alfa filter box which I considered taking a punt on to fit VW's warm air system into but thought I'd just leave it.. sure a stock box could be modded to bolt on easy enough..

...got to figure out why carb pump isn't squirting next..thought I'd see how those 33's squirt and found out they don't.. no wonder it needed some easy start to set it off!

And cheers for the bracket photos to base them on too

Best dig out another bolt.. must be one lying around somewhere...

Mine didn't either, there's a non return valve in the bottom of the bowl which seals like a jet but has a shoulder to prevent you screwing it in too far. Mine had been replaced and they were too short, didn't seal so bypassed the one way valve. I suspect another part from the wrong carb like the pump jets. With fuel in the bowl just covering the valve you could see it blowing the fuel back into the bowl instead of out of the jets. I cured it by dropping tiny O-rings, possibly the mix screw type, down into the holes to seal the valve against. Worked a treat.

  20. They were my main suspect.. I can hear something moving so guess it's going back in the bowl.. no seals rings on the 36's just a ball weight and screw from memory

..edit.. wrong valve... changed that o ring

I'll take that out again and make sure it's working..
